2013 Curveball artista Cody Scarpetta underwent Tommy John surgery last summer and won’t be able to get back on the prospect trail until midseason at least.
2012 Cody Scarpetta's last name means "small shoe"—ironic for a tall, wide-bodied pitcher whose biggest concern is too many walks.
2011 A beefy right-hander with low-90s velocity, a big 12-to-6 bender, and a name straight out of Jeopardy’s dreaded “Opera” category, Scarpetta has missed both bats and the strike zone in equal measure throughout his pro career. If he can cut down on the free passes he may wind up with a career in the middle of Milwaukee’s rotation; if he can’t, he’s bullpen-bound like the protagonist of Berlioz's Faust.
2010 A big right-hander with low-90s velocity and an excellent curveball, Scarpetta struck out more than a batter per inning in his full-season debut. This year the Brewers will hand him a copy of the standard Double-A tasklist—improved command and a better changeup—and may ask him to lay off the Veal Scarpetta for a while to firm up his “husky” physique, but so far he’s right on schedule.
2009 A torn finger tendon bumped Cody Scarpetta down to the 11th round in 2007; surgery cost him the season and additional bonus money while forcing the Brewers to protect him from the 2008 Rule Five draft. His pro debut went well, as he missed plenty of bats with his low-90s fastball and power curve.
