2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Former first-rounder Joe Savery seems to have finally honed in on a role after vacillating between hitting and pitching, but he could be in big trouble if 2012’s home run issues aren't fixed fast.
2012 Converted from relief to first base and allowed to hit full time to start the season, Savery went 14-for-18 in his first five games in the Florida State League. That's not a typo. The rest of the spring was the slow reemergence of statistical likelihood. By summer, Savery was back on the mound and looking much more like the first-rounder he was in 2007. He broke through for his major-league debut, so he could be in the mix for bullpen innings if another stint in Triple-A goes well and any of the more established options succumb to injury. At the very least, he has the potential to warm the hearts of the Brooks Kieschnick fans of the world.
2011 As a pitcher, Joe Savery was one of the most disappointing players in the system. As a first baseman, he's totally untested. If the transition works out, be ready to hear all about it. He hit well in three years at Rice, so it's not completely implausible.
2010 Savery was the Phillies' first-round pick in 2007, and selected despite a disappointing junior year at Rice. The stuff the Phillies thought would develop just hasn't been there, as his velocity has dropped into mid-80s, and his breaking stuff lacks snap, so his performances in the high minors have left a lot to be desired. His control was poor in Double-A, and simply got worse at Triple-A. At this stage, Savery seems more likely to make the majors as a reliever (if anything), and we can safely say that his elite prospect status is deader than Elvis. The Phillies are going to keep him starting in the minors for now, but at this point everyone's just marking time and wondering if something good will happen.
2009 Savery had some shoulder issues during his final year at Rice, but he looked fully recovered last fall after the Phillies used their first-round pick on him. Unfortunately, that stuff didn't hold up over a full season, as he lost considerable velocity and sat in the upper 80s with his fastball. He's a former power lefty now pitching with finesse stuff, and if the out pitches don't return in the next two years, maybe they can try him out as a hitter—he had third- to fifth-round potential as a slugging first baseman.
2008 The Phillies' first-round pick in 2007, Savery was a two-way star at Rice who played first base and hit cleanup when not pitching, but as a left-handed power arm, his professional future was always on the mound. Considered a sure-fire top ten pick entering the spring, Savery slipped to 19th because of some shoulder soreness, but he was impressive in his pro debut, with all three of his pitches (fastball, slider, changeup) grading out as average to plus. The Phillies were impressed enough to send him to the Arizona Fall League with just 26 innings of pro experience, which suggests that his timetable could be accelerated.
