2003 Kazu was clearly injured late in the season. The splitter disappeared from his arsenal and since that’s his most deadly pitch, he became fair game for the league’s hitters. When he did throw the forkball, he would frequently wince and clutch his arm. But he was fine, they’d tell us. After the season, it turned out he had a bone chip in his shoulder, and in late October he had surgery in Japan. He should be healthy in time for spring training. Given Sasaki’s age, injury history, and make-the-fans-sweat style, his gaudy contract was probably not the wisest investment, but the team seems to run a second payroll for Japanese players. Other Mariners will talk after games about how since Kazu sweats a lot, he wants them to sweat as well, and they’re joking, but their voices have a little terror in them, too.

Once, while drinking in the center field beer garden next to the M’s bullpen, I saw three Japanese tourists looking through the fence. My Japanese is one step up from "worthless" so I didn’t catch the full conversation, but they were wondering if Kazu was going to pitch that night. Kazu got up from the bench (which is right next to the fence and faces the field, and so ahead-and-to-the-right of the tourists), walked back, and explained that he had pitched two nights in a row so he wouldn’t be coming out that night. And then he thanked them for coming to see the game, gave them a quick bow, they returned the bow, and he went back to the bench. How cool is that?
2002 When he’s spotting his fastball and dropping his forkball on batters, Sasaki is as unhittable as anyone in baseball. Other times...not so much. Cutting down on the dingers and walks made him less impressive but much more effective. When Ichiro signed with the team, he told everyone that while he was happy to play with Sasaki, he wouldn’t be drinking with the notorious master of alcohol. If someone wants to bet you on a Sasaki/David Wells drink-off, take Kazu and try to act surprised when you’re collecting the rube’s money.
2001 Closers are overvalued as a species, but “Daimajin” earns bonus points for putting an end to an era of late-inning futility in the Northwest. Everybody knows about his devastating forkball, but the key to his success is effectively spotting the fastball so that he can deploy the forkball. For that reason, I think Sasaki will improve on last year’s numbers. He had bone chips removed from his elbow in August of 1999, and it generally takes at least a year to regain full velocity and command following that type of surgery.
