2007 Julio Santana called Dr. Yocum to ask him why he was pitching so badly, and was told `Tommy John`.
2003 After pitching surprisingly well for the Tigers as a middle reliever, Santana began to decline in effectiveness in late July. A month later, he was officially shut down with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, which kept him out for the rest of the year even though he did not undergo surgery. Detroit designated him for assignment in December; the much-traveled Santana is probably finished as a big leaguer.
2001 A couple of years ago, converting position players to pitchers was the rage. While Felix Rodriguez has turned out okay, most proved no better than the original Clint Hartung. Julio Santana is one of the guys people were excited about, and there’s still enough here for some prurient interest. He bounced to the Giants on waivers and then the Mets in the Rule 5 draft. He can be a useful swing man for long relief and spot starts against righty-heavy lineups.
2000 Picked up from the Devil Rays in July, Santana had a stretch of moderate effectiveness in 1998, but hasn't really shown much else. He’s prone to the long ball and walks too many hitters. He was injured at the time of the trade and never actually pitched for Boston. He’s just another spare arm in the bullpen mix for 2000.
1999 Texas' celebrated shortstop-turned-pitcher found himself on waivers in April, when the pennant-hungry Rangers decided they didn't have time to wait for his development, even though he was out of options and they couldn't arrange a trade. The Rays got a steal. Still unrefined but with a great arm, he worked from the pen for the first month, then moved into the rotation when Alvarez got hurt and Durham callups couldn't cut it. A sure thing for this year's rotation.
1998 He used to be a shortstop, but his arm was so good they put him on the mound. Which I guess means we need to be patient with him. He had some awful starts with Texas (three quality starts in 14 tries), was better in the bullpen but not much. Santana hasn’t pitched well yet at any level higher than Double-A.
1997 Santana is a converted shortstop who, a year ago, was widely regarded as their best pitching prospect. He’s got a very strong arm—that is, after all, why they made him a pitcher—but he’s still very much a thrower with a lot to learn about pitching. His control showed a lot of improvement; unfortunately, his strikeouts fell precipitously.
1996  The pitching prospect. With the possible exception of Rick Helling, this one pitcher is basically the only reason Texas fields AAA or AA teams. He got pasted at Oklahoma City, earning a demotion to Tulsa. He's still heavily reliant on his fastball; as a converted shortstop, he's probably still learning the nuances of pitching.
