2012-01-10 13:00:00That's funny, I never even think of C as a position since I've never, ever had a good C before.
(kddean from loop)
That might be a mistake. Catcher is the most scarce and definitely needs to be paid attention to. Their stats count just as much as anyone else's. Would you rather have Brian McCann and Placido Polanco or Pablo Sandoval and George Kottaras? (Derek Carty)
2011-05-26 13:00:00I don't know. I respectfully disagree with you. I think Sandoval was moved from catcher because they thought they had a guy who was going to hit .315 over a twelve year career and playing catcher would jeopardize that potential. Well, the lustere has worn off Pablo Sandoval and he is in great shape. They got Miguel Tejada, Fontenot, Manny Buress, and Sanchez to play 3B, SS, and 2B. Throw Sandoval behind the dish.
(Aceball from Reno)
That's fair, and the weight loss should help. I'm not sure if getting Burress into the lineup is really that much better than whoever would become the fulltime catcher. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-05-18 13:00:00Injuries are plaguing my team at the moment. - Joe Mauer - Pablo Sandoval - Andrew Bailey - And now Ike Davis Which first baseman do you think will have the most value in the short term? - Brett Wallace (who I picked up and can quickly drop) - Mitch Moreland - Eric Hosmer
(HonusCobb from Hopedale, IL)
I'll jump on the Eric Hosmer bandwagon here. He's made a pretty smooth transition to the major leagues and is also showing power. I like Wallace a lot, too, but he plays on a bad team, which cuts down on his RBI opportunities. (John Perrotto)
2011-03-09 13:00:00Jeremy - While early Pablo Sandoval seems to be back to the old Panda. Thoughts on his numbers for this year in a standard 5x?
(Shane from Miami)
I'll probably target Sandoval. He should get back over .300 and be a top-10 third baseman. Deinitely would take him over Casey McGehee, who's being drafted first on average. (Jeremy Greenhouse)
2011-02-22 13:00:00Now that Pablo Sandoval reported to camp 38 pounds lighter and 11% less body fat, do you expect him to return to his 2009 form? .300+ average with 25 HRs?
(Sean from DC)
I expect him to eat 38 pounds of food in the next 24 hours. (Jason Parks)
2011-03-02 13:00:00Do you buy a weight related Pablo Sandoval resurgence? Or will he be my generations Mark Fidrych? Stealing what Bill James wrote about The Bird, Pandamonium was more fun than a barrel of monkeys
(EricJ from SF)
Well, we heard the same stories last year, and it didn't help, but I'm enough of an optimist to think maybe this time around he got the message. He'll be better than last year, if short of 2009's magic. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-11-09 14:00:00Is Pablo Sandoval's ass bigger than Kevin Mench's head?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Yes. But smaller than Benny Agbayani's. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-10-01 13:00:00My unsubstantiated observation is that free swinging young players (ie Pablo Sandoval, Delmon Young, etc) who don't take many walks peak earlier in their careers than others (Vlad would obviously be an exception). This would be the result of pitchers doing a better job of not giving them good pitches to hit. Do you think my hypothesis would bear out empirically? and can Carlos Gonzalez be an exception if that's indeed the case?
(Randy K from Kansas)
Walks are key for a few reasons. One, they're valuable in their own right. Two, they're a sign that a player is able to be selective, and won't swing at as many pitcher's pitches. When a player is younger, they can get away with it more, because they can compensate for it with good bat speed. (This is why walk rates tend to be one of the skills that peaks late.) As far as Carlos Gonzalez - his batting line is so, so weird. And it's hard to learn discipline when you're getting results like this. (Colin Wyers)
2010-07-26 14:00:00Just how far has Pablo Sandoval's stock fallen? I'm in a very deep mixed league keeper with knowledgeable, dedicated owners and I haven't even been able to give the man away...(I have better options at 3B).
(Michael from St. Louis)
I'd give you something (not much, but something) for him. He's not as bad as this year's numbers, any more than he was as good as last year's numbers. He's a likely bounceback candidate for next year. If you would have told me the Giants would be where they are today with KFP playing as poorly as he has, I'd have laughed at you. (Ken Funck)
2010-03-24 11:00:00Follow up on the NL West, why do you think the Giants won't be in the mix?
(SprungOnSports from Long Island)
They could be, but that offense is just plain, old-fashioned, bad. It's Pablo Sandoval and ... who's the next best hitter? Shierholtz? I mean seriously, that's bad. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-03-17 14:00:00Am I the only one who still fantasizes about the possibilities of Pablo Sandoval catching; even on a limited (backup) basis? That bat is HOF caliber there.
(beta461 from SF)
Even with the lost weight, it just isn't going to happen. This is definitely the stuff of fantasy, Strat, and wishcasting. Not that it isn't lovely to think about, of course. ;-) (Christina Kahrl)
2010-02-05 13:00:00If you had to choose one player for the next 10 years out of Adam Jones and Pablo Sandoval, who would you pick?
(Jimmy from DC)
Sandoval has the better bat, but Jones plays a weaker position and can field well...I still think I may go with Sandoval. I really, really, really love his bat. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-28 14:00:00Is there any way to look at the Giants off-season as anything but another disaster?
(bjmd from SF)
It's glum stuff in terms of Sanchez and Huff, certainly, because the disasters involve the elective decisions to sign them, and forgo other alternatives. If the goal was to wind up with a first baseman who might not outhit Travis Ishikawa or Nate Shierholtz or John Bowker, with the flexibility of Mark DeRosa and Pablo Sandoval allowing you to rotate around if all three deliver (no laughing... OK, some laughing), maybe all that's lost is money. I still think the Dodgers and Rockies are takeable, but the disaster is that Sabean didn't seem to realize it, and lined up adequate propositions in an offseason where other teams have been considerably bolder and more creative in fixing their problems. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-14 16:00:00Nothing lasts forever? Look no further than my career. Thoughts on the Giants off-season moves?
(Axel Rose from Cold November Rain)
(Tries to think of clever linkage between GNR's "comeback" and the Giants. Not working.) Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa, Aubrey Huff, Mark DeRosa. They will all play where? I'm scratching my head. (Russell A. Carleton)
2010-01-21 13:00:00Lightning round: Pablo Sandoval in 2010: about the same as 09, better, or worse?
(Gregjitsu from Rside)
Honestly, about the same. Pablo Sandoval is Nomar Garciaparra to me. The good version that hit for a high average with solid power. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-11 13:00:00True or false: The slimmer, trimmer 2010 version of Pablo Sandoval will be a strong MVP candidate.
(dianagramr from NYC)
A. Are we sure he'll be slimmer and trimmer?
B. (More difficult bonus question) -- Are we sure that being slimmer and trimmer makes him a better player? (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-08-11 13:00:00In all seriousness would liposuction be good for someone like Pablo Sandoval’s career? Im not so much worried about this or next season; more to helping those knees hold up 10+ years.
(Eric J from SF)
How about just a diet? Or a Wii Fit? (Will Carroll)
2009-08-05 13:00:00Huge Giants fan here, wondering what your thoughts were regarding Pablo Sandoval in terms of 1)a comparison to another player that you think he will become and 2)whether he can stick at 3rd base for the next few years?
(brianpekrul from San Francisco)
I still swear that he's like a shorter, fatter version of Nomar Garciaparra, back when Nomar could catch up to anything and was a lock to hit for a high average. He's doing pretty well at third, so as long as the big guy doesn't turn into a bigger guy, then he should be fine. (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-13 14:00:00How is Pablo Sandoval not on the All-Star team, even after two injuries?
(Jon from SF)
I count just one injury, Beltran, and Manuel picked his own guy. Which seems to be the thing to do. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-07 13:00:00Biggest snub is clearly Matt Kemp, right?
(Michael from Los Angeles)
It's one of the bigger ones, for sure, though at least he's still eligible in the final vote, as is Pablo Sandoval, another worthy who was snubbed. As a matter of fact I think most of the 10 candidates on those two ballots have solid cases with Pena, Lind, Inge, Sandoval, and Figgins giving Kemp a run for his money. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-07-01 14:00:00What's your take on Pablo Sandoval, is this what we can expect from him moving forward? Also, is there a better nickname for him than Kung Fu Panda?
(Auggie from Anaheim)
I don't think we should expect him to slug in the .550s indefinitely, but the guy can rake, yes. Hrm... "Human Flesh Hydrant" probably isn't flattering, but if we translate it into Japanese, that could be a lot cooler than "Kung Fu Panda." (Christina Kahrl)
2009-06-25 13:00:00As of the submission of this question Pablo Sandoval has seven walks in his last ten games. Fluke, or a sign that Pablo may be able to add a little patience to his approach now that pitchers aren't throwing him strikes?
(Jake from S.F.)
He's young enough to learn, no question. Locker him across the room from Bengie Molina, though. Maybe even in the visitor's cubhouse. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-18 13:00:00Thanks for the chat, Marc. Who will be the better 3B option in a 10 team/20 keeper league: Pablo Sandoval or Andy LaRoche? What are the odds LaRoche hits 20 homers in 2010?
(Guancous from Silver Spring, MD)
I like Sandoval a lot. I have faith in LaRoche to be a pretty good third baseman, but Sandoval is going to be a scary hitter in his own right. I would stick with Sandoval if I had to pick one (and I did, Sandoval is catching for me right now). (Marc Normandin)
2009-06-15 13:00:00Will - heard anything on Pablo Sandoval's elbow? Is a return to 3B where he has increased value imminent?
(Rob from Oakland)
Yeah, he's been throwing and with Uribe out (and saying that makes me feel like I'm in a time machine ...) it's good timing. (Will Carroll)
2009-05-07 14:00:00Given your love of fat players, how would you describe Pablo Sandoval? "Pandaesque" comes to mind.
(dianagramr from NYC)
I really need to compile like a short book of best scout quotes I've ever heard. On Sandoval: "Man, that fat [expletive]-er can hit." (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-16 13:00:00Pablo Sandoval can hit, but can he stay at 3rd? How long does this experiment go and is there any chance they let him try and catch until Posey is ready?
(Dave from Boston)
Given the other options, I'd run him out there until a better choice pushed him to first base. It could be a while, and will almost certainly involve an external choice. (Why do I have this image of Adrian Beltre signing with the Giants?) I also would try and have him catch 10-20 times, just to keep those skills on his resume. Realistically, he's an everyday 1B by 2011. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-10 14:30:00Pablo Sandoval: over/under .300, over/under 15 home runs?
(Drew from Columbus)
Under, over. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-12 13:00:00What are you thoughts thus far on Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa in San Fran?
(Elmo from Bay Area)
I was pretty sunny on both of them a few weeks back in TA, and so far, they haven't been disappointments. I think it's safe to say neither one of them is the new Lance Niekro. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-03 14:00:00How common is it for a guy like Pablo Sandoval to just wake up one day and understand how to hit? He had never been above Double-A and hadn't been all that good even at single-A and suddenly he is a big league catcher...err third basemen...err first baseman? Did the matrix find him? Also, what's his ceiling?
(miasmu from boston)
Dude hit in the DSL, dude hit in the Northwest League, and dude showed some real signs of life even last year, when I'm pretty sure I was the only living human to put him in the Giants top 10. He always hit, it was more of a matter of where he ends up defensively. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-04-23 13:00:00Can you please say something nice about a Giants' position prospect?
(AF from brooklyn)
I'm a big Nick Noonan fan, and he's hitting well in the Sally League, although it would be nice if he took a walk . . . just one. Pablo Sandoval remains the best kept secret in that system. (Kevin Goldstein)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableHow is it that Bill Madlock doesn't show up on Pablo Sandoval's list of PECOTA comps? They're the same guy. Same chunky build (official heights and weights are identical) similar batting results, same position(s)... (Steven Goldman)
