2005 Tampa made the decision in the spring that Sandberg wasn't the answer to their third-base problem, even when it was conclusively proven that Blum and Rolls weren't the answer either. Granted, he removed all temptation by having an exceptionally poor year at Durham, still plagued by colossal strikeout rates.
2003 The occasional four-bagger is basically Sandberg’s entire offensive game. He made the most of that profile in 2002, ranking third in bombs with the Rays despite his abbreviated season. Sandberg isn’t going to be a star, but he’s got a shot at being an average—and cheap—third baseman offensively and in the field for the next couple of years. If everything breaks right, he might grow up to be a randomly generated Bell boy.
2002 Hal McRae’s irrepressible giddiness over Sandberg, even as he struggled to hit .200, smacked of the Terry Shumpert fiasco back in Kansas City. Perhaps, like Shumpert, Sandberg will be allowed to throw away at-bats by the gross for several years before he’ll be held accountable for his batting average. Sandberg might pop a dozen homers or so, but his average will likely be downright Shumpertian.
2001 Ryno's nephew reached Double-A and survived, though he's not getting much play as a prospect. Jared Sandberg is neither a stathead favorite nor the kind of athlete that gets the D-Rays excited. He has Aubrey Huff ahead of him at third base, as well. He needs about one more step forward to have a shot at a platoon career. The name helps.
2000 After washing out of the Sally League a year earlier, he more than held his own in the Florida State League, finishing second in the loop in homers. He also tied for the league lead in strikeouts, courtesy of a long swing riddled with holes. Sandberg will be severely tested in Double-A, but even if he falters, his tools and surname will get him plenty of chances.
1999 Sandberg - yes, he is related (nephew) to that other Sandberg guy - was the Appalachian League's MVP a year ago as a second baseman. This year, the Rays' tried to take advantage of his arm by moving him to third, while advancing him to the Sally League. It didn't work out, as he was lost at the plate (76 Ks in 56 games) and the field (22 errors in those same 56 games). Sent back to the New York-Penn, he was again a dominant offensive force as well as a quality glove.
1998 Young Jared is the object of desire (or just plain ire) in Chicago, because he’s related to some other Sandberg and the Cubs didn’t draft him. He’ll likely get to skip Charleston to move up to St. Pete. It’s still early, but you know how baseball loves players with bloodlines.
