2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Prior to earning backup-catcher duties, Sanchez had played in fewer than 50 games in the upper minors. With that in mind, struggles were to be expected. Giants fans bestowed the nickname "Hacktor" upon Sanchez due to his free swinging. Among batters who saw 800 or more pitches, Sanchez ranked 14th in swing rate at pitches outside the strike zone. Not all is bad with him, though, as he can barrel balls up and rip line drives. Further major-league seasoning may help Sanchez better determine which pitches he should drive and which he should take. Behind the plate, he won't find himself mentioned with the finest defenders. Overall, Sanchez is a capable, developing, cost-controlled backup catcher.
2012 Buster Posey's injury accelerated Sanchez's rise through the system, as the Giants pushed him from High-A San Jose (where he had played just 52 games) to Triple-A Fresno so they could see whether he was ready for the majors. He hit .305/.370/.366 and got good reviews from Fresno manager and ex-catcher Steve Decker in his month there so the Giants promoted him again. He evokes a young Pablo Sandoval in a lot of ways: very heavy, but athletic for his size, with inconsistent plate discipline and the ability to square up anything close. "Evokes" doesn't equal "comp," though, and Sandoval represents a best-case scenario that only the most optimistic fanboys would expect. The return of Posey in 2012 will let the Giants take the foot off the accelerator, allowing Sanchez a full year in the high minors to hone his plate discipline, pitch blocking, and catching mechanics.
