2009 Lumbering Humberto Sanchez, acquired in the Sheffield trade, arrived as a starter but has been remanded to the pen for fragility after Tommy John surgery; he was wild in AFL action, so he'll need some work to inventory what's left.
2008 This portly pitcher was plundered from the Tigers in the Gary Sheffield deal, but, by the time he actually pitches for the Yankees, they may need to take him on Antiques Roadshow to see what they got. Previously a hard thrower who got by on his fastball and slider, Sanchez was never good at staying healthy and had missed the last month of the 2006 season with an inflamed elbow prior to being acquired by New York. In spring training, that inflammation returned and soon he was going under for Tommy John surgery, which the Yankees hope will solve things. Losing a few pounds wouldn't hurt his recovery; the Yankees will see how many Twinkies went into the rehab when spring training convenes.
2007 Sanchez is probably an overrated prospect. He has never thrown more than 123 innings in a season, and he missed the last two months of 2006 with an inflamed elbow. His large frame raises questions about his conditioning. Let`s stop being polite: The kid is fat. Both his fastball and his curve are major-league ready, and he turned in one of the most impressive performances of last year`s Futures Game, but the Yankees would be smarter to convert him to relief than to hope he`s the second coming of Bartolo Colon.
2005 Another one of the organization's mechanical messes, Sanchez is a tall, chunky kid with good stuff and variable command. On the plus side, he's shown an improved commitment to conditioning to avoid that classic El Guapo figure. Sanchez throws a good sinking fastball, which leaves Carlos Zambrano out there as an absolute best-case scenario, but there's lots of work left to be done.

2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)do you see any role in the Yankees' pen this year for any of: Jeff Marquez, Mark Melancon, J.B. Cox, Kevin Whelan or Humberto Sanchez? Any plans to use Horne in a Joba 2007 role? Thanks for your great work!
(Eli from Brooklyn)
I think just because of the numbers game that Horne's big league career will probably begin in the bullpen, but it would be silly to expect a Joba like performance from him (or frankly, anyone). I was never a big Cox fan, but Whelan and Sanchez are both guys who could get later looks if they can throw more strikes (Whelan) or look good after elbow surgery (Sanchez). (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for answering my question, what yankee prospects, if any, are flying under the radar, players with a legitimate chance at becoming usefull big leaguers; and are Humberto Sanchez and Tim Battle amongst them?
(TonyPenaHuntsQuail from CT)
Battle, certainly not. Sanchez, maybe -- if he can stay healthy and lay off the buffet table, he should be a fine reliever. (Kevin Goldstein)
