BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Salazar was essentially a replacement-level performer for the Padres. He appeared in our 2001 and 2002 annuals, but vanished again until he showed enough consistent pop to resurface in the 2009 edition, which should give you some idea of how useful he is when he's not slugging. He has shown an odd reverse split over the course of his career, as well as in 2010, supplying most of his production against his fellow righties, and he's also that oddest of creatures: the utility player who doesn't defend well at any position. Now 32 years old, Salazar won't be arb-eligible until 2012, so he may never make enough money to fund his true calling in life: a chain of health-food-conscious restaurants named "Salad Czar's."
2010 Kevin Towers engineered one of the season's more curious trades last July when he dealt Cla "No Y" Meredith to the Orioles for Salazar. Salazar is 31 years old, in his eighth organization, and primarily a pinch-hitter because there's no defensive position he hasn't tried and been found lacking at. Just as surprisingly, new GM Jed Hoyer kept Salazar on the 40-man roster. Salazar can add some right-handed thump from the bench, and there's some utility to having a guy who can stand at almost position and feel about as equally ready to (not) handle what's hit at him at any of them, but it seems a strange use of a roster spot over the winter.
2009 Years back, Salazar was signed by the A's out of Venezuela in '94, and seemed a promising hitter, but one without a defensive home on the diamond. Then he started bouncing around on waivers, washing up in the Orioles' system in '07. His outstanding work in the Venezuelan winter league suggests that his recent good stickwork is no isolated event, and as one of the very few position players on the 40-man, he might finally get a chance to stick around.
2002 Salazar is a middle infielder with (bonk) a very solid bat, improving plate discipline (fling), and enough youth to be a very intriguing prospect. The organization is pretty well stocked with (boot) middle infielders, and Salazar is probably well behind Crosby and German, although he could hit his way into the picture. The problem is 37 errors in Double-A and footwork that scouts describe as being as good as it's going to get.
2001 Another Venezuelan, Oscar Salazar is compared to Mike Bordick. Heís being used as a utility infielder so far, but he might end up as a full-time shortstop. Hey, it worked for Melvin Mora despite his limited range. Salazar made the right impression on the organization by working hard and becoming a lot less careless at the plate and in the field this year, but he isnít patient, and he struggled against left-handed pitchers. Heíll needs to continue to improve across the board, but guys who can play six or seven positions have a way of getting opportunities.
