2009 Salas had spent portions of the last three seasons in the big leagues, but he was in Durham for most of 2008. A converted infielder, he has a lightning arm that delivers his mid-90s cutter with ease; lamentably, it's his only real pitch. He dares to mix in a slider on occasion, but it's a flat and sloppy thing, and if you're being pressed into surviving on cutters alone, they had better be in Mariano Rivera territory. The cutter that Salas has is good, but it's not that good, and that is why he's just an extra arm.
2008 In many ways, Salas is still learning on the job, which can be tough when you're 29 years old. A converted third baseman, he didn't start pitching until the end of 2004. He has one excellent pitch, a mid-90s fastball with plenty of movement, but everything else is still a work in progress, including his slider and his command. He could have late-inning possibilities with just a small amount of improvement in those last two areas.
2007 Salas`s control has gotten better as he`s advanced, but it`s hard to tell whether that`s meaningful or a statistical trinket given his innings-pitched totals. He allowed 28 hits in 63 innings between Double-A and Triple-A before appearing in Tampa`s bullpen, which is insanely low, especially for someone who just finished his second full year of pitching. His BABIPs were also astoundingly low, as if he had Ozzie Smith, Tris Speaker, and Mercury playing behind him. It`s unlikely that his one-pitch plan of attack will work in the majors, but he`s out of options and it can`t hurt to find out.
