2010 Jae Kuk Ryu went to spring training with the Padres after being claimed off waivers from the Rays in the offseason. The Indians claimed him off waivers on March 26 only to have the claim ruled invalid by the commissioner's office, and that was followed by the Padres releasing him on April 1, which is the last anyone heard from him. Got all that?
2009 Jae-Kuk Ryu won't especially be missed, but he will miss most of 2009 after elbow surgery.
2008 Since being lured out of his native South Korea as a teenager with a seven-figure contract from the Cubs, Ryu has become best known for the April 2003 incident in which he purposely knocked an osprey from its perch with a ball, ultimately killing the bird and earning himself a demotion, a lot of bad press, and a few death threats. At this point, that may be his legacy. Back in the day, when Ryu's age began with a one instead of a two, he could dial up low- to mid-90s fastball, but he's never been the same since some 2004 elbow problems and is now reduced to being a finesse pitcher without enough finesse. Karma's a bitch.
2007 Ryu survived elbow trouble in 2004 and has made a compelling case since then that he can handle the minor leagues. He had a rather disastrous introduction to the majors, however, yielding four home runs in his May 28 start against the Braves. In spite of all the maneuvering in the Cubs` rotation, he never got another chance to start, even after returning to the majors in late August. Between returning starters and newly signed ones, there will be a crowded mound in Mesa, making Iowa his most likely destination at the end of camp.
