YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 As a second-year player, Ross will no longer wear his trademark faux cowboy get-up and pink backpack to the bullpen this season. A non-roster invitee last spring, he pitched his way on to the big club and quickly cemented himself as the Rangers’ primary lefty reliever, posting a 0.95 ERA over 34 first-half appearances. The second half was less kind. He limped to the finish line with command troubles and minor injuries. Everything Ross throws—including his little-used changeup—has cutting action that consistently missed barrels in 2012. Although the Rangers may give the 23-year-old a look in the rotation, his thin repertoire is better suited for relief work. Ross’s production could take a slight step back in 2013, but he should remain an effective bullpen weapon.
2012 Former second-round pick Robbie Ross continues to make developmental progress, advancing to Double-A and more than holding his own in the rotation. As a diminutive southpaw with two above-average pitches and a good feel for throwing strikes, Ross might end up being a better fit for the bullpen than a major league rotation.
2011 A former second-round pick with a bowling-ball fastball, diminutive southpaw Robert Ross will start the 2011 season in the Frisco rotation, hoping to become the first second-round pick to reach the majors with the Rangers since Nick Regilio, who was drafted in 1999.
