YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Rosales has been filling the A's' reserve-infielder needs for three seasons, and though he lacks the offensive profile or the defensive chops for full-time work, a system that is startlingly thin at shortstop may press him into an expanded role. His minor-league profile paints the picture of an offensive force in the middle of the diamond, with a career slash line of .286/.358/.477 in more than 2,000 at bats and an OPS in excess of 800 at every level of the minors. At 29, Rosales is essentially the shortstop equivalent of Kila Ka'aihue (who departed for Arizona in November).
2012 Rosales is a classic utility player, capable of playing every position on the field. Unfortunately, Rosales doesnít play any one position at a high-level, but the 28-year-old does provide a valuable service to a 25-man roster. An ankle injury and subsequent surgery in 2010 limited his effectiveness in 2011, both in the field and at the plate. But when healthy, this versatile player has some contact ability and pop in his bat, and enough defensive chops to handle the left-side of the infield.
2011 Rosales always had a reputation as the type who outplays his tools, but his showing with the Reds in 2009 convinced many that he'd hit a wall in the big leagues. Picked up for Aaron Miles before the 2010 season, Rosales proved to be a valuable bench player, seeing time at every infield position and left field. The skills still fail to impress, and his defense is a bit short on the left side, but the combination of versatility and a modicum of hitting ability make him a valuable, versatile player who saves some roster spots.
2010 Drafted as a shortstop in 2005 and moved to first base in 2007, Rosales spent the majority of his time in 2008 and 2009 at third. All that movement tells us that Rosalesí primary value is on offense. Indeed, heís a career .299/.353/.490 hitter at Triple-A. The catch is that, given an extended trial in the majors last year, he didnít hit a lick, which is problematic for a notional offense-first player who will be 27 in May. The ability to play all four infield positions and left field in a pinch will only go so far.
2009 Rosales is a victim of the rare and awkward minor league short-to-first position shift, or the Mike Morse Shuffle, as we sometimes call it. Players who go from short to first are usually tall shortstops who are decent with the bat but deemed not to have enough arm for the hot corner or the agility to play second. The problem is that if the guy's bat doesn't have quite enough juice to make the trip all the way across the defensive spectrum intact, he's pigeonholed, a utility guy nobody trusts to play defense anywhere but first base. What Rosales has going for him is a team that was desperate for anyone to play short in 2008, and may be similarly disposed in 2009.

2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, Jason. I'm just wondering who, in your opinion, are the five scrappiest players in the majors today. Please use statistics to back up your assertions.
(Noah from NY)
Mark Ellis: almost died, definitely scrappy
Adam Rosales: runs real fast everywhere he goes, super scrappy
Josh Willingham: plays baseball despite having two-foot-long legs, mad scrappy
Jose Altuve: like 5'2", so scrappy
Munenori Kawasaki: has made a career out of being an Ichiro-stalker, hella scrappy

Stats are not scrappy. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2010-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why does Adam Rosales sprint around the bases when he hits a home run?
(Pete from Tampa)
I don't know. But whoever he was racing against, he won. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-03-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey John, Can you tell us anything positive out of the A's camp? Things seem redundant. This is their fourth year in a row with a Sheet-load of health questions going into the season.
(ashitaka from long beach, ca)
Adam Rosales, who they got from the Reds for Aaron Miles, has been outstanding. There's some good news, though Ben Sheets pitching well would be better news. (John Perrotto)
