2009 Romak was surprisingly left off the 40-man roster by the Pirates after hitting a combined 25 home runs, but he went unclaimed in the Rule 5 draft. Like many Canadian amateurs, his skills are a little raw, but he has the power and plate discipline to make for a true three-outcomes hitter. Romak began playing first base after being promoted to Altoona late last season; although he has a strong arm, he may be better suited to first because of his limited range.
2008 Romak was the other guy acquired from Atlanta along with Adam LaRoche in the January 2007 trade that sent closer Mike Gonzalez and shortstop prospect Brent Lillibridge to the Braves. Romak has as much raw power as any Pirates' prospect, but the operative word is raw, as his amateur experience was limited while growing up in Ontario. He has no speed and is subpar defensively, but his willingness to take a walk only enhances his power potential. Romak will begin this season at Double-A and that should begin to tell whether he has a legitimate chance to play in the major leagues.
2007 A very raw Canadian amateur, James Romak is just coming into his own at the plate in his third year as a pro; the other phases of his game are still lagging behind.
2006 The Ontario talent pipeline strikes again, eh? Romak hadn`t exactly impressed in his Gulf Coast and Appalachian League stints, though lower back trouble had much to do with that. Shifted from third base to right field, he repeated the Appy last year--something that raised eyebrows, though he was still one of the team`s youngest hitters--and gave the Braves plenty of reasons not to give up on him. Alas, a broken bone in his hand ended his season in early August.
