DateQuestionAnswer
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Scott Rolen looking to play another yeat? It seems like he retirement announcement was imminent, but nothing happened. What should the Reds expect from Todd Frazier next year?
(Tommy from Flowmont)
I don't know, but I hope not. I drafted Rolen in a Scoresheet league when he was in A-ball, so I have fond memories of him coming up with the Phillies back in the day. It's tough to see his career crumble at the end. Same with Todd Helton. Or Brian Giles a few years ago. As for Frazier, he'll be as good as Dusty Baker lets him be. (Geoff Young)
2012-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)With the prospects of Votto returning before the end of the season, do you expect Todd Frazier be the everyday 3B in Cincy? Dusty likes his veterans, but Frazier has quietly had a very good rookie season.
(Reggie from Uptown)
Frazier has been hitting, but you know what is weird? Scott Rolen, since July 1st has hit .338/.442/.521 in 23 games, 86 plate appearances. My guess is Dusty will give his vets every chance to fail and Rolen isn't failing, at least not right now. (Matthew Kory)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good chat! How do you think the season goes for Scott Rolen? Are we at the end now?
(Jerome from T Hills)
Pretty much at the end, especially from a fantasy-relevant standpoint. The health concerns that impacted him throughout his career have a bigger impact at this age as his bat continues to slow down. (Paul Sporer)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Scott Rolen just, like, kinda done, or is he seriously seriously done?
(Johnny from San Diego)
I'm guessing seriously done (but only one seriously), which makes me sad. I really wanted him to pad his Cooperstown case some more this season. Not that he should have to, but, you know, he has to. At this point, though, the injuries have taken their tool, and it looks like he's only hurting his chances. I could be wrong, though. He's looked lousy before and come back to have strong seasons. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)With spring training news that the shoulder of Scott Rolen actually appears healthy, is he worth a role of the dice in Cincy's lineup? Seems like rbi's and average could be alright in a NL 4x4.
(Frederick from roaming)
He's not, but that means Frazier now isn't worth a roll of the dice, either. (Sam Miller)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite players to deal with, both past or present?
(Gerald from Savannah)
Geez. That's a tough one because there are so many good guys I have dealt with in 24 years of covering baseball. I hate to leave people out but some of my favorites would have to include Sean Casey, John Burkett, Jay Bell, Craig Wilson, Jason Schmidt, Michael Barrett from the past. From the present: Jason Bay, Cole Hamels, Carlos Pena, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Nyjer Morgan, Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Adam Jones, Max Scherzer, Don Kelly, Chris Perez, Adam Dunn, Matt Capps, Torii Hunter, Kurt Suzuki, Ian Kinsler. (John Perrotto)
2011-06-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who is a good darkhorse HOF candidate among active players? Maybe someone who flies under most people's radar in a HOF discussion, but who has a fighting chance. Roy Oswalt, maybe?
(jamin67038 from Wichita, KS)
Scott Rolen comes to mind, since much of his value is tied up in defense and walks.

I don't see Oswalt as viable because I don't think he'll stick around much longer given his back woes and his past talk of retirement. He's well below the JAWS peak standard, and nowhere near 200 wins. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Roy Halladay and Scott Rolen retired today, would both be voted into the Hall Of Fame?
(Sasha from China)
Nope. Blyleven is the first starter with less than 300 wins to gain entry via the BBWAA since Fergie Jenkins in 1991, so the voters aren't going to trip over themselves rushing to elect Halladay, who has less than 200 (169). Pedro Martinez will be the next non-300 winner to gain entry, I think.

As for Rolen, his lack of an MVP award or round-numbered milestone will work against him, as will the fact that so much of his value is tied up in OBP and defense that the voters aren't likely to fully appreciate it. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Joe! Glad to see that work on your book is coming apace, I look forward to buying (and reading) it. My question concerns Scott Rolen - is he a HOFer? Bill James has been running a series on 3rd basemen recently that got me wondering, and I checked his profile out on BP and he's got 80.2 WARP (I'm assuming WARP3) over his career.
(belewfripp from Knoxville, TN)
I think he needs a couple more years to make up some of the counting-stats deficit caused by his time missed to injuries. He doesn't have to play at 2010's level, but some above-average seasons allowing him to get to 2500 hits and approach 400 homers would help. There are people who don't think Chipper Jones is a Hall of Famer, and Rolen slides in behind him for sure.

I think he will be deserving in time, and will eventually get in through the front door after 6-7 years on the ballot. From a narrative standpoint, this October could be important. (Joe Sheehan)
2010-02-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on the 2010 Reds? Any chance they contend in 2010?
(Brandon from Charleston, WV)
No. I think PECOTA is dead wrong on that team. The division isn't great, so it could be like a couple years ago where they "stay in it" but they'll need Stubbs to establish himself, for Jay Bruce to be a real star rather than pretty good, and Joey Votto to take the next step. They're counting on Scott Rolen and a Dusty Baker pitching staff to stay healthy so ... (Will Carroll)
2009-10-06 13:30:00 (link to chat)Kieth Law was surprisingly down on the Reds' outlook. What's your take? I know Bailey's been pitching well against weaker lineups, but if they get something out of him next year to go with Cueto and Harang and can land another decent SP, aren't they in the hunt for the Central, especially if Holliday departs? Is it really impossible for them to go after Holliday?
(jromero from seattle)
From what I understand, the Reds aren't going to be able to add much payroll and Scott Rolen constituted their big move for 2010. I think the Reds have a chance in a division that is pretty weak. The big thing for them is to avoid injuries because, as was shown this season, they don't have the depth to loss many players. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Recently, I feel like I'm in some kind of bizarro universe, because I just can't find any logic in the Blue Jays dealing Halladay. He's the face of the franchise, whose loss would make them immediately a crappy team, who could practically win a seven-game series by himself if they can squeak into the playoffs, and a potential inner-circle Hall of Famer wearing a Blue Jays cap. If you're smart, you keep this guy at all costs, including next free agency. If you want to save money (which it seems like), deal Wells and Rios for pennies on the dollar. Am I missing something?
(chunkstyle from Toronto)
I understand your point and I can't say I totally disagree. However, Halladay is the only guy who will get any talent back for the Jays. They would get nothing but salary relief for Wells or Rios, which are two ridiculuos contracts. Scott Rolen isn't going to fetch much either. Thus, the Jays are backed in a corner. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why are the Reds not more aggressive sellers? I heard Jocketty had a deal done but was vetoed by Castellini for money reasons.
(Scott from Greenville, SC)
The Reds are a very odd organization to figure. I thought they were one big bat away from contention during the winter and never made a move to get that piece. Now, they are trying to get Scott Rolen, who has seen better days. Strange days in the Queen City. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please explain to me how this rumored Scott Rolen deal to Cincy is good for the Reds?
(Gray from Chicago)
It's not, so I won't. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)I understand you aren't commenting on trades until they are finalized, so answer me this instead. The Reds are said to be trying to trade for Scott Rolen. I just checked the standings and they're 9.5 games back and in 4th place. Forget whether they trade happens or not and tell me why would they do that?
(mattymatty2000 from Philly)
I honestly have no idea. The Jays have to be pretty happy to find someone to take Rolen, and presumably a bunch of money, off their hands, but I fail to see why the Reds would make a this-year trade at this point. He makes them better, to be sure, but it's peculiar. Not quite the Pirates dealing for Matt Morris, but there are similarities. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Rolen to the Reds? Please explain.
(Mike from NJ)
Didn't deal with this side of it, I don't think. I can't explain it, unless Walt Jocketty is thinking, "The last time I traded for Scott Rolen my team eventually won the World Series." I find it to be a strange decision. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)How can the Reds lose on the Rolen deal? Their system is full of fantastic arms, they have no financial limitations so they don't need cheap, young talent, and plenty of teams have won without a major league left fielder or a starting shortstop. Umm...I hope...
(Oliver from Cincinnati)
If Scott Rolen's just this guy (non-Zaphod) who hits singles and needs the park to produce his power, that's not all that special, and people might think they've gotten "SCOTT ROLEN, GREEK GOLDEN GOD," when they've gotten the petering-out tail end of a great player's career. He wasn't walking, he wasn't hitting for much pop, and while you can credit his physical skill in adapting to his newfound limitations (a la Carney Lansford or Brook Jacoby), the Reds aren't getting the guy we all remember in a Phillies uni, or the one who showed up at times with the Cardinals. It's a placeholder pickup that I expect figures to disappoint some people's expectations. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)I seem to recall JP taking a lot of heat for the Troy Glaus- Scott Rolen trade....that one doesn't look so bad now does it?
(hokie94 from Howard OH)
I'm not sure it turned out all that well, but as I've said, a lot depends on the pitching. Rolen didn't propel the Jays anywhere in particular, Glaus outplayed him in 2008, and I don't really think Encarnacion takes you anywhere in particular as much as he holds the job for as long as you control the rights to him. It's sort of like getting worked up over Jan Zizka's career: injury-plagued transient success doesn't negate a certain ephemerality. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)I haven't heard a lot of noise about what a great year Scott Rolen is having. Do you think this performance is sustainable while he's healthy, or is he just hit-lucky?
(E from B)
It's not really all that noise-worthy, but it is interesting, sort of like Brook Jacoby's last good season, or Carney Lansford's willful transmogrification into a contact hitter. I don't see these things as obvious positives, just interesting. If hitting this way helps Rolen stay healthy enough to contribute, maybe he erases some of the frustrations with the challenge trade. Still, less is less, and what he's doing these days is less than he's been able to do in his career. Maybe it's an interesting suggestion that player aging patterns might revert to older, pre-PED forms. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Chipper Jones on a HOF track in your opinion? Scott Rolen? Any other active 3bman not named Alex?
(Chris from Biloxi)
I think last year put Chipper over the top in the minds of some voters, because he has remained an incredible offensive force even as his own body has turned against him. He's got the MVP, the All-Stars, the ring... it's a robust candidacy.

Rolen I'm much less convinced. He's had one good year out of his last four, and while people underestimate how valuable his early career performance was, guys who stop being plus players in their early 30s tend not to fare well. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Jays contenders if they would have started the season with Gaston and giving Lind more playing time or is this just a nice looking winning streak that has happened late in the season?
(Ted from at the pool)
Lind's presence over the dessicated remains of Shannon Stewart or Kevin Mench/Brad Wilkerson certainly would have improved matters, but there's a lot of other factors that would have had to go right - better health (and fortune) from Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum, B.J. Ryan, Vernon Wells, Scott Rolen... wow, that's a lot right there. A.J. Burnett avoiding his mid-season cold streak, too. Given some better luck in breaks like those, they coulda been contenders, but as it is, it's just a nice-looking winning streak. Their potential as spoilers (7 games vs. Boston as Joe from Tewksbury mentioned above) probably shouldn't be underestimated. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, can Scott Rolen ever be expected to regain some of his former power? Thanks
(rawagman from Toronto)
At this stage, no I don't think so. Degenerative shoulder and age are a bad combo. (Will Carroll)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, thanks for chatting! Tell Jenn we all say hello...questions as to Hanley: (i) is the shoulder back to normal? I've heard rumors that he may suffer from hypermobility of the joint; any truth? (ii) how much, if at all, is the drop in order going to affect his performance?
(Silv from (NY, NY))
I'll do that.

Yes, I'm hearing the same thing, but it was just the labrum that they cleaned up, so the surgeons thought any mobility of the joint wasn't a problem. I think we'll see a drop in power, at least in the first half, but overall, it's not an injury that tends to linger, at least when caught early. There's a point where he'll get to the Scott Rolen stage if this goes chronic. (Will Carroll)
2008-01-15 14:30:00 (link to chat)Speaking of change of scenery, who looks better after yesterday's deal, Scott Rolen or Troy Glaus? Or is the answer so health-dependent that we don't know until somebody gets hurt? (Any chance of a joint profile on both of these guys?)
(BillJ from New Mexico)
A joint profile, eh? I was going to cover them in a BP Fantasy Beat piece tomorrow, a third base review, but we'll see what happens down the line.

Rolen should see his numbers improve in the homer-rific Rogers Centre, and Glaus will see his go the other way thanks to St. Louis' homer reduction. It does depend on who gets on the field the most though. (Marc Normandin)

I've been looking over the records in a desultory fashion, and you can find examples like Scott Rolen in 2004 (0-15) or Placido Polanco in 2006 (0-17), but I still haven't gotten to the last time a pair of teammates were shut out.
