2013 Dependable Triple-A infield bat Luis Rodriguez joins a messy competition for the Angels' utility spot, but his age and unaccomplished major-league peregrinations are marks against him.
2012 Students studying Spanish in high school know the trickiest words are the ones that sound like one English word but mean something else. Sopa, for instance, doesn't mean soap, and darned if anybody can remember that. Or the word Franchiso. Sounds like it would mean "franchise," but Luis Rodriguez' nickname is "El Franchiso," so obviously it means something else, like "utility infielder hoping for a non-roster invitation, slow and squat backup shortstop, patient hitter who draws walks despite hitting like Glass Joe, persistent old guy in Triple-A, hard player to hate."
2011 Luis Rodriguez proved you don't have to be at a corner to be a Quad-A guy just biding time until his next shot; he'll be in the Mariners' camp as an NRI.
2010 Rodriguez is the type of player who is always one bad year away from being dropped from the 40-man roster, which is exactly what happened to him again following the 2009 season. He has his uses as a switch-hitting utility infielder whose glove plays at second, short, and third, and for an otherwise unimpressive batsman, he manages to squeeze in a decent number of walks. Signed to a minor-league deal by the Indians in the offseason, he could certainly repeat his journeyman's lot by eventually landing on their Opening Day roster.
2009 Venezuelan Rodriguez took over shortstop for Khalil Greene when the latter was battered into submission by a hopped-up suitcase. He's not much of a shortstop, has all the home-run potential of Stephen Hawking, and is a "switch-hitter" who checks his bat against left-handed pitching. Unless the Padres have acquired another shortstop by the time you read this, Rodriguez will start. It's going to be a long year.
2008 Luis Rodriguez is a generic utility infielder who was claimed off waivers by the Padres immediately after last season. He can't play short, which limits his career options.
2007 Rodriguez has spent much of the last two years as the Twins` secondary utility player, backing up all over the infield. While the versatility is nice, the ability to coax of few walks here and there his only real skill. The Twins like versatility and they like stability, so while Rodriguez went non-tendered at the end of the year, the Twins quickly signed him to a non-guaranteed deal.
2005 Rodriguez is perhaps the darkest dark horse in the infield competition, since he won't overwhelm anyone with his power, speed, or glovework. But if Cuddyer goes to third and stays there, for everyone else it becomes all about beating out Rivas, and that can be done. Rodriguez has line-drive sock, and he's an accomplished bunter. Throw in his willingness to take a walk, and the Twins would do well to give him a look, especially given the competition.
