YearComment
2002 With the bad trades the contenders made, it's a wonder anybody won the AL Central. After arriving in Cleveland, Rocker went from closer candidate to mop-up man in about three weeks, and while the line above looks OK, his ARP with the Tribe was Ė3.4. To the amusement of the mainstream media, Rocker was traded to the Texas Rangers in December, joined shortly thereafter by Carl Everett. The rush to analyze the potential ramifications of two so-called "bad guys" sharing a postgame spread was sports journalism at its worst, nothing but speculation and innuendo, stuff better fit for the gossip page of a New York tabloid. Both players will help the Rangers, maybe even all the way into October.
2001 His protestations aside, it's clear that the aftermath of John Rocker's discourse on urban diversity in the late 20th century had a negative impact on his performance. After his demotion and recall, his performance was right in line with what he did in 1999, maybe better. He's prone to MillitelloMoments(tm); the rest of the time he's nasty.
2000 Whatís not to like? Rocker throws in the high 90s out of a funky motion and mixes in a good slider. That motion works both ways: heís hard to pick up, but he also occasionally gets out of whack and loses the strike zone completely, particularly against right-handed hitters. Thatís a small concern; Rocker is a top-tier closer. It is unknown what impact the Sports Illustrated interview, in which he came off as a xenophobic jackass, will have on his career.
1999 The Braves already have more pitching prospects than the entire AL West, and then they get lucky. Rocker was plodding along with an undistinguished minor league career just a year ago, but the Braves moved him to the pen, something clicked (probably his 97-mph fastball), and he was suddenly holding major league hitters to a .172 average. Iím not as optimistic about his short-term future as youíd think; his fastball doesnít move as much as youíd like, and when he canít get his breaking ball over for strikes, hitters can sit and wait for a pitch to drive. Long-term, heís a stud.
