BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The 2006 third-round pick was as impressive as possible for a reliever in his big-league debut, striking out the side against the White Sox on June 26. Unfortunately, things got pretty rough after that. Small-sample-size warnings abound, but Robertson held the 72 fellow lefties that he faced in the big leagues to a .190/.268/.317 line, while the 37 righties who faced him collectively went .290/.436/.484. He has an extremely strong slider that dominates left-handed hitters, but even a LOOGY generally ends up facing righties at least half the time, so he'll need to find a way to get them out to stick around.
2012 A third-round pick back in 2006, Tyler Robertson couldn't find a second plus pitch to accompany his slider as a starter, but he fared pretty well upon converting to relief last year. The 6-foot-5 lefty did show a significant reverse platoon split, which could prevent him from getting pigeonholed as a LOOGY.
2011 The Twins have decided to convert Tyler Robertson into a reliever, since he has failed to get a feel for his changeup and was knocked around in his first season at Double-A.
2009 Tyler Robertson, a 2006 third-rounder, has just an okay fastball and poor mechanics, but his plus slider makes him very tough on lefties. He was shut down in July with tendonitis and hasn't pitched since, so his outlook for 2009 is cloudy.
2008 The Twins held Robertson back in extended spring training to begin 2007, but when their Low-A franchise needed another arm, he went to Beloit and was one of the league's best pitchers during his three month-plus tenure. He's big and physical, with plus control of an average fastball and a very good slider, but some wonder how well that combination will play as he moves up.

2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Should we be worried about Robertson for next year? the rest of this year?
(Pickles Dillhoefer from Early Grave)
I hope you survive, Pickles. We're all counting on you.

I'm going to assume that you're talking about David Robertson and not Tyler Robertson. David should be fine the rest of the way. His injury seemed minor, and he has already returned and had a good outing. A winter of rest should do him good, and while trying to predict the vagaries of relievers from year to year is extremely trickly, Robertson has been one of the best this year. (Mike Gianella)
2008-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Looking for a little help on some minor leaguers... Chorye Spoone (SLAP Tear of Labrum), Fautino De Los Santos (TJ) and Tyler Robertson (Cant find any info!)... what are we looking at with these guys, in terms of time/recovery? I know FDLS is out for a good portion of 09. I have no clue about Spoone and Robertson. Thanks.
(alskor from Rhode Island)
Minor league injuries are tough to follow due to the sheer number and the difficulty in getting good info. I wish I could help more, but minors are Kevin's beat and I could only give generalities. (Will Carroll)
