2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I really gird my loins for a 32-130 Padres season? My loins can't take that kind of girdin'.
(Clyde from Pittsburgh)
Hey Clyde, thanks for the question. Coming into the season, the Padres had four or five legitimate big-league pitchers. Two of them (Edinson Volquez and Huston Street) have been terrible. Even after Sunday night's strong showing from Clayton Richard, their starters own the NL's highest ERA by a lot. It will be good to see Chase Headley back in the lineup this week, but his presence won't help a bad pitching staff. Unless the Padres find some guys who can get big-league hitters out, it's going to be a long season. (Geoff Young)
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hopefully now that the Padres Pitching Plague is behind them, I feel a solid starter is a pressing need for the Padres. When Luebke returns back from the dead we should have Volquez, Luebke, Stultz, Richard, [body]. Whom do you think the Padres should throw in there? Personally, and I know this is a pipe dream, but I'm liking James Shields.
(Brandon from San Diego)
Hi Brandon, thanks for the question. I like Shields, too, but we're gonna need a bigger pipe. The tricky thing with the fences moving is that they can't just go get some random Kevin Correia type and hope it works. Clayton Richard led the NL in homers allowed last year despite calling Petco Park home. Some of the guys I mentioned above as being candidates for the Cardinals might be good fits in San Diego as well. Edwin Jackson wouldn't be a bad idea, but do the Padres have what it takes to sign him? I don't know. (Geoff Young)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)NL only. Who has a better season Chad Billingsley, Kyle Lohse, Clayton Richard, Josh Collmenter? Looking to find a late round value.
(will.I.ain't from Holding pattern)
Billingsley, for upside and floor. (Sam Miller)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)You forgot Fallout: New Vegas, which I'm not really excited for as much as under the thrall of the original two (I geeked out when my buddy played "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" at his wedding, it's that bad). Also I asked about local multiplayer games last chat and can report that the Scott Pilgrim game is worth the $10 if you like side scrolling beat 'em ups at all. Unfortunately it'll probably be around and relevant longer than the movie Same keeper question, with three free pitchers: Jaime Garcia, Max Scherzer, Clayton Richard
(Jack from Boston)
I'm not that excited for New Vegas, honestly. I'll pick it up eventually but I'm not in a rush to get it at all. I was planning on picking up the Scott Pilgrim game next time I turn on my 360, as I already have some points in my XBLA account. I saw the movie last night, and it was everything I wanted it to be--it's a shame no one else is going to see it, because it's fantastic.

Scherzer's numbers don't tell the story of how excellent he has been this year. He's at 2.28 ERA, 9.5 K/9, 3.7 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9 since he returned from the minors. Scherzer is a stud. I like Clayton Richard quite a bit, though Kevin Goldstein and I currently disagree on whether or not his strikeout rate is for real. He got it up to 6.7 last year after never coming close to that outside of a brief 44 inning stint at Triple-A, and is up at 7.1 now. An above-average K rate and the ability to keep the ball on the ground more often than in the air makes me confident he'll continue to succeed. Garcia is a lot like Richard, actually, though he's a groundball pitcher which makes him a better bet. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on the Peavy return for the Pads?
(Clog the Bases from Uptown )
Four pitchers! FOUR! Clayton Richard isn't anything special, but he's not going to hurt you, and now he's out of The Cell and in the pitcher friendliest park in the league. I think highly of Poreda, and from what I can tell the other two guys aren't too shabby either.

Did I mention they got FOUR pitchers for him? That's more pitchers than they had when they opened the year, and half as many as seem to be on the DL all the time. (Marc Normandin)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Not remotely good enough? Clayton Richard is barely a #5 SP, and Poreda is going to be a reliever as a pro. If those two guys are the two best pieces of the deal, I don't see how the Phillies theoretical offer "isn't remotely close", considering most would consider Drabek and Brown both superior prospects to Poreda, and Carrasco a much better option than Richard.
(James from Boston)
Poreda is a better prospect than any of those guys, and you're ignoring the two PTBNLs, who I'm going to guess are comparable to Drabek and Brown at worst. (And remember, I'm not thrilled about the Sox package for the Padres, so coming up a bit short of it is "not remotely close.")

As an aside, if you're the Padres, isn't the way to do this to get a list from Peavy of places he'll go. Get him to commit that if you make the trade, he'll accept. Then go to every team on his list and just ask for their best guy, or best two if the first isn't that great? If you have to trade him, you might as well aim high. Say what I will about this deal, at least the Padres would get the Sox top guy; compare that to the Santana deal. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are Chris Getz and Clyaton Richard the 2nd baseman and #4 starter, respectively, that the sox need them to be to repeat as division winners?
(tjoconn from waukegan, il)
I think if Clayton Richard is making 30 starts for you, you are NOT going to repeat as division winners. (Kevin Goldstein)

BP Roundtables

DateRoundtable NameComment
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesI saw Clayton Richard play a HS football game. Insanely strong arm, so much so that it cost the team the game. Coach was in love with it despite a 40mph head wind and an offensive line that outweight the defense by an EASY 50 lbs each.

As for the K's, it has to be that he's throwing harder knowing he's not in long, right? (Will Carroll)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesRandom fact #5: Clayton Richard played football at the University of Michigan where he was a backup quarterback to Chad Henne in 2004. He completed 8 passes in 15 attempts that year. (David Laurila)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesWhen did Clayton Richard become Billy Wagner?

Four straight strikeouts for a pitcher who had 29 in 47.2 innings this year. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff Gamesand Joe is correct (no shock there) as Longo delivers an RBI single. It seems that based on the last month of the season, Ozzie lost any confidence whatsoever in his bullpen, except for Jenks.

That said, here comes Clayton Richard -- who I don't have a lot of confidence in myself.

Is there time for another KG story as Richard warms up? In the first year of the AFL, Rays first base coach George Hendrick was managing and I was sitting right behind his dugout. There were like 200 people at the game (it is the AFL) and as he team came off the field he said, "all right, now which of you [expletive, rhymes with suckers] is gonna get me some runs?" Then he looked up in the stands and apolgized to the family sitting a row behind me.

I'm so not bitter about that one.

Crawford singles another one home for a 6-3 win, and it's getting ugly. (Kevin Goldstein)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile
