2012 Wilkin Ramirez continues to waste his athleticism and tools. He turned 26 in October, and is past the point where potential is supposed to turn into results.
2011 The Tigers gave up on toolsy outfielder Wilkin Ramirez, and after about a month with the Braves, they understood why.
2010 Ramirez is a perennial prospect due to his tremendous athleticism and tools, but he very nearly got relegated to one-line status because he can't stop striking out so damn much. That's not the only raw-edged components in his game—he also makes his share of mistakes on the bases and in the field. With old men in the outfield corners and Curtis Granderson in pinstripes, raw may be no roadblock to a big-league job this spring, but if you thought Curtis Maybin needed seasoning last season with the Marlins, you can imagine how much paprika it'll take in this instance.
2009 The Tigers have been extremely patient with Ramirez, who has had one of the best tool packages in the system for years, but he didn't really perform up to expectations until last year. He has above-average power and speed, but his plate discipline has always been a problem, and probably always will be. If he somehow figures things out at the plate, he could be pretty good; if he doesn't, he's probably the next Juan Encarnacion—at best.
2008 Moved to left field last year, Wilkin Ramirez did not re-establish himself as a prospect. Although reaching Double-A at 21 is mildly promising, he just can't hit.
2006 Ramirez has a quick bat, making him a favorite among scouts who react to `bat speed` in the same way that statheads do the Tex Avery howling wolf thing for `OBP.` Ramirez also has? strength, so he does project to be someone with 30-homer plus potential. In fact, he has all kinds of potential: the hole in his swing gives him 160-strikeout potential, and lousy footwork at third gives him 40-error potential. The good thing about strikeouts is that they`re a very visible problem, attracting a lot of attention from coaches. A minor improvement can have a big effect, so if Ramirez can cut the strikeouts by 25% and keep everything else intact, his batting average should jump 30 points and his slugging average 50. Thus, instead of projecting as an average hitter he`d project as a star.
