YearComment
2013 Ramirez has been a solid bullpen piece for five years now, continually introducing changes to his approach to compensate for declining fastball velocity. In 2011, he threw more sliders at the expense of his fastball; in 2012, he cut the slider back and went much heavier on changeups. One might worry about nibbling, however: Ramirez threw the seventh-fewest pitches in the strike zone of any pitcher with 50 or more innings last year. If Ramirez has a good month or two to start 2013, Sandy Alderson and company might do well to find one of America's suckers born every minute and flip him for a youngster.
2012 Since the trade that sent him from Boston to San Francisco, Ramirez has leaned ever more heavily on his slider, and the benefits have shown up in both his groundball and strikeout rates. The former was the best of his career in 2011, with his GB/FB rate exactly doubling his 2010 mark. The latter was the result of a dramatic increase in his whiff rate, as Ramirez got swinging strikes more often than such flamethrowers as Jordan Walden, Aroldis Chapman, and Neftali Feliz. While much of the focus on the Mets-Giants trade was on Pagan and Torres, Ramirez could turn into the key piece.
2011 Ramirez’s strikeout rate has declined in each of the last two seasons, but a BABIP heading in the same direction has helped him hold the line in his overall numbers. Still, the net effect is not unlike stretching a rubber band; at some point it will snap back, and that’s going to hurt, particularly at arbitration prices. Monthly splits show that Ramirez was more effective as the 2010 season went along, but again, luck on balls in play contributed to his superficial success. His highest single-month mark was .289 in April, and in September his opponents hit just .077 on balls in play. That last stat is harder to repeat than “toy boat.”
2010 Acquired from the Royals for Coco Crisp, Ram-Ram appeared to replicate his solid 2008 season in 2009. A closer look reveals that a dip in BABIP masked a correction in his home-run rate and a dip in his strikeout rate. Ramirez also got by with some impressive clutch pitching (opponents hit .193/.290/.295 with runners in scoring position), and his 2.73 home ERA masked the fact that opponents hit .285/.363/.477 against him at Fenway. All of that suggests he could be in for a rocky 2009.
2009 As measured by Adjusted Runs Prevented, Ramirez was the team's most effective reliever last season; his 22.5 ARP was the sixth-best figure in the majors. A large part of that success was due to his extreme stinginess with the long ball—amongst pitchers with 70 or more innings, only Roy Corcoran and Jason Grilli had a lower rate of home runs allowed. Ramirez altered his pitch sequencing in 2008, throwing fewer fastballs and sliders and more changeups, a shift in philosophy which paid off. The solid season allowed Dayton Moore to take advantage of Boston's desperation to fulfill its Ramirez quota by trading Ramon for Coco Crisp, solving Kansas City's problem in center field.
2008 Elbow and forearm problems carved up Ramirez's 2007 season, but his 8.31 ERA is deceptive; he allowed runs in just five of his 22 big-league appearances last year, but when he was bad, he was awful. Ramirez pitched well enough during a six-week stay at Colorado Springs to indicate that he can help a team when he's healthy. He might inherit Hawkins' innings this year.
2007 Yeah, he was probably worth a year of Shawn Chacon. After an unimpressive run in the minors with both Yankee and Rocky affiliates, the righty with the hard slider started the year like a house afire, holding the opposition scoreless over his first 15 1/3 major league innings and allowing a run in just one of his first 22 appearances. Once the damn broke, however, Hurdle exiled him to the back of the bullpen queue. Late season wildness and his fly-ball tendencies may catch up to him in the short run, but his success in longer relief stints in 2006 could augur another role for this Colorado find.
2005 Another peewee hurler; the Yankees apparently pluck 'em early, like baby carrots or new potatoes. Like potatoes, they are placed in a silo and aged a couple of years. In this case, the trick is on the potatoes, because no one ever comes to get them out of the silo. Eventually they are rescued by sympathetic beings from outer space, but often not in time to have major league careers. Ramirez has a 95-mph fastball, a good curve, and strikes out many a batter when they're not hitting line drives off him. Currently a starter, headed to middle relief.
