BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 A 46th-round pick back in 2004, lefty reliever David Quinowski lost the 2008 season to Tommy John surgery, but has pitched well since his return, continuing to do so after making the leap to Double-A last year.
2007 The Giants altered Quinowski`s delivery into a funky sort of sidestep that hides the ball and, despite a fastball that only reaches 90 MPH when a stiff breeze blows in from center field, hitters can`t make solid contact, producing anemic hit totals (including a .144 opponents` batting average). He went up against better competition in the Hawaiian Winter League and still held hitters to a .200 average. Lefty, righty, it doesn`t matter; no one can pick the ball up off of him. He`s another pitcher for whom high fly-ball rates in the minors could transform into high home-run rates in the majors. Giants pitchers allowed the highest percentage of fly balls in the National League last year (29.6 percent) and had the 14th-lowest rate of grounders (43.6 percent), which, in turn, led to the 13th-lowest rate of turning double plays (11.2 percent). Clearly the Giants encourage their pitchers to work up in the zone in order to take advantage of Pac Bell`s fly-deadening ways, but there are consequences to this strategy that could work against them.
