YearComment
2004 As a general rule, the informed-outsider position means disregarding most things about a player that cannot be objectively confirmed. It doesn't claim that those things don't exist or don't have an impact, but it's an acknowledgement that much of what we know about players' personalities comes through at least one filter, and is rarely presented without bias. This doesn't mean that you can't jackass your way out of a lot of money. Mark Quinn might have had a little Carlos Lee-type career for himself. Now, he'll be lucky if they remember where to send his pension checks.
2003 One of the characteristics that separates winning organizations from losers is this: a winning organization would build on the strengths Mark Quinn showed in his rookie season (power, ability to hit for average), instead of allowing his weaknesses (strike zone judgment, defense) to eat him alive. That Quinn has become an injury-prone hackmaster instead of a top-tier left fielder is as much an indictment of the organization as any trade Allard Baird has made. He’s likely to be forgotten after last year’s washout, but there is still a 900 OPS waiting to be unleashed here.
2002 Just as Carlos Febles seems unable to get through a season without hurting himself, so Mark Quinn seems unable to get through one without incurring a demotion. He doesn't hit enough to DH, and playing him in the field behind a pitching staff that puts a lot of balls in play is a formula for doubles. Despite the problems he had, Quinn is still projected to be the Royals' starting right fielder in 2002.
2001 In case you hadn’t heard, Mark Quinn is, uh, confident in himself. He also has ridiculously good hand-eye coordination, which is what it takes to hit .290 while corkscrewing yourself into the ground on every swing. The Royals’ Rookie of the Year disappointments have fans a little skittish about the future of any Royals rookie. Whether you call it arrogance or self-assuredness, confidence is a necessary ingredient in the success of virtually any star player and is why I think that Quinn, despite his age, has better days ahead of him.
2000 The Royals have no room for any more outfield prospects, but the Mighty Quinn refuses to make their decisions any easier. Despite a swing so awkward and violent that he nearly falls down on his follow-through, he has now won batting titles in each of the last two years, a feat doubly impressive for a right-handed hitter. Last year he was rated the best defensive outfielder in the PCL, and he was so awed by the majors that he became the first player in 35 years to hit two homers in his first game. He’s supposed to be too old to have real star potential. Then again, he’s torn off every other label slapped on him, so why should he stop now?
1999 He’s not young, and all he does is hit. But he deserves a major league job, because bats like his can make up for a lot of weaknesses. He used to have an unorthodox, awkward-looking swing, but he swing much more gracefully now without hurting the end result - he won the Texas League batting title. The Royals have too many roster spots in the outfield tied up to give him a job, and he doesn’t fit their mold anyway. But if his offense improves even slightly, he’s going to have a season too monstrous to ignore.
1998 Very quietly put together a tremendous season. He’s a little old for the leagues he’s played and has an unorthodox hitting stance, which I can best describe as something like Al Simmons’ old foot-in-the-bucket. The Royals seem content to leave his swing alone, and if he puts on a power display for Muser in March, he could be in position to take over right field in Kansas City if Dye fails again.
