2003 The ex-Cub showed a few moments of promise, but overall, it was not a fantastic season. Often criticized for his lack of conditioning, but a bigger concern is his lack of control. Quevedo has the stuff to be absolutely dominating, but lacks the command to take advantage of it. In a different organization, he’d probably still be getting time in the minors.
2002 The best acquisition the Brewers made all year. Quevedo may fall short of being an ace, but he’s going to be very good. He throws five pitches for strikes, the usual four (fastball, curve, slider, change-up), plus a forkball. He doesn’t pump gas the way Neugebauer and Sheets do, but he’s in the low 90s. What’s not to like? A couple of things, actually: his workloads at such a young age, and his bulk. Until the weight starts affecting his knees (and subsequently his delivery), he’ll be a good third starter in what is shaping up to be a good young rotation.
2001 After a couple of short and ugly stints, Ruben Quevedo was called up to enter the rotation at the end of July. He rattled off four straight quality starts, the third of which was a 133-pitch complete game against the Dodgers. He then had seven straight bad starts. Quevedo throws in the low 90s with a good slider and splitter and an adequate curve and change-up. If the Cubs would be patient, he would be a good one. He’s being worked hard in winter ball, so his chances of getting hurt are increasing.
2000 Quevedo is a rapidly improving Venezuelan picked up from the Braves in the Hernandez/Mulholland deal. His velocity is increasing as he matures, he has excellent movement, a good knuckle-curve and he can trot out a slider for show. If the Cubs bring him up, they woul d be wise to put him in long relief and give him 70 or 80 innings there. There are plenty of other starting pitchers to choose from, and Quevedo's future isn't worth risking just to make the Braves deal look good sooner.
1999 Another outstanding pitching prospect. Quevedo is a very young Venezuelan who has a good sinking fastball and command of four pitches. He’s tasted nothing but success as a pro. Prospects like Quevedo are the ones the Braves should be dealing to restock their arsenal with young hitters; alternatively, they could go after Barry Larkin and try, for one year at least, to copy the Yankees’ formula: build a team so utterly without weakness that they’re invulnerable. But having a dozen Grade A or B pitching prospects and an enormous hole developing at shortstop is not an efficient way to build a team.
