BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Lance Pendleton, a former teammate of Jeff Niemann's at Rice, was in Houston again in spring training last year as an indy-league Sugarland Skeeter when the Rays scooped him up to eat Triple-A innings.
2012 Pendleton pitched three perfect innings against the Rangers in his major league debut. This was after he was claimed in the Rule 5 draft by the Astros and then returned to the Yankees in March when a deal couldn't be reached, only to be designated for assignment by New York and claimed again by the Astros. It was all downhill from there, however. His fastball is straight as a string and tops out at 91 mph on a good day, and he likes to work up in the strike zone. These traits combine to produce heaps of fly balls, and neither Yankee Stadium nor Minute Maid Park is ideal for that. The Astros outrighted Pendleton and he chose to become a free agent, so a team that plays in a more favorable park can pick him him, no strings attached.
2011 Lance Pendleton was drafted way back in 2005, but Tommy John surgery put him on the slow boat to the majors. He's a bit old to be a prospect and compounds a just-okay strikeout rate with fly-ball tendencies. The Astros selected him in the Rule 5 draft, giving him a shot at a fifth starter's job he almost certainly would not have received from the Yankees.
