2013 A Rule 5 selection from the Giants, Paterson was used very carefully in 2011 as the D-Backs limited his exposure, but a solid performance in the LOOGY role opened the door for an extended look. He broke camp with the team in 2012, but he got lit up like a Disney parade during the first month of the season and would not resurface in Phoenix. A pitcher who had excelled at keeping the ball in the park became homer-prone last year, giving up as many bombs in his 46 innings split between the majors and minors as he had surrendered in his entire career coming into the season, spanning 218 innings in the pros.
2012 Paterson's 34 frames last season were the fourth-least ever thrown by a pitcher with at least 60 appearances, behind only Tony Fossas, Arizona predecessor Mike Myers, and the ageless Jesse Orosco, whom Paterson probably had a poster of in his childhood bedroom. Like those previous practitioners of the situational lefty trade, Paterson can expect his yearly ERAs to fluctuate wildly without much of a change in his underlying performance, since BABIP variations over the small samples that constitute his seasons will largely determine how his stat lines look at first glance. Fortunately, 2011 was a low-BABIP year, but Paterson’s peripherals suggest that he can survive—maybe for decades—even when fewer balls bounce his way and more than 5 percent of his flies leave the park.
2011 A 10th-round pick out of Oregon State in 2007, Joe Paterson (one “t,” please) doesn’t have Alex Hinshaw’s raw stuff, but he has had the better results of late, which makes it a bit perplexing that while Hinshaw was protected on the Giants’ 40-man roster, Paterson was left exposed and taken by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft. A wily southpaw with a good curve who is well-suited to match-up work, Paterson has a decent chance to stick in the Snakes’ rebuilt bullpen.
2010 It may not chap Joe Paterson's hide to have seen Runzler rocket past, but he was dominant against lefties (.112/.194/.147) with slower stuff, and figures to get hocked up into somebody's LOOGY role someday.
