BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 If only this comment could be about the John Parrish who played Jax Briggs in the Mortal Kombat movies instead of John Parrish the professional pitcher, or Maxfield Parrish, or even Homer Parrish, the amputee sailor played so touchingly by real-life veteran Harold Russell in The Best Years of Our Lives. Then we could talk about real achievement instead of a veteran southpaw who has never conquered his control.
2009 The hard-throwing former Oriole arrived in Toronto at the end of June to provide some help as a swing man. As always, he was better in relief, in this case much better, posting a 1.46 ERA out of the pen compared to 5.10 in his six starts, though his peripherals were a mess in both roles. You can blame small samples, we’ll blame the fact that John Parrish just isn't that good. Special bonus fact: lefties hit .305/.364/.525 against him last year, so however hard he's throwing, they're rocketing them right back out of the box.
2008 Seattle dealt disappointing minor league outfielder Sebastien Boucher to Baltimore for equally disappointing reliever John Parrish last August. Parrish made eight appearances for the M's, all in losses save for his second outing in which he was charged with the tying runs, yet still earned a hold because his runners scored after he had been removed from the game. Non-tendered in December, he's likely to have a new dance partner lined up by spring training despite his poor control and past elbow surgeries because it's hard to give up on a lefty who can bring it in the 90s.
2007 John Parrish missed the entire 2006 season after yet another elbow surgery (cleaning up some of the mess left over from his TJ in 2005), but he`s on the 40-man, and the Orioles understandably want to see if he can still throw hard.
2006 Parrish took over as the pen`s long man after Bauer was sent down. The pitchers were still doing well enough that there just wasn`t any work. When he did pitch he was extremely wild, even by his own lax standards for control. He was eventually diagnosed with a strained elbow ligament, which turned into a tear. He`ll be out at least part of 2006, recovering from his July TJ operation.
2005 Parrish was a decent starting prospect a few years back, but it never really worked out. Besides the regular bias MLB teams have against sub-six-foot starters, there was the more pressing problem of what his lack of control did to his pitch counts. He's made the conversion to full-time reliever since missing all of 2002 with a knee injury, and figures to move up the bullpen pecking order into Buddy Groom's old spot. Still needs to improve his control or risk yielding a ton of runs.
2004 Parrish's eye-popping numbers had a lot of people wondering what he was doing at Bowie. It turned out to be an unforeseen problem with their new Triple-A affiliate: Canadian immigration wouldn't issue him a work permit because of a two-year-old DUI incident, so the team had little choice but to work him out in Bowie. After missing all of 2002 with a torn knee ligament, Parrish converted completely to relief, usually in a multi-inning role. He could help the Baltimore pen this year.
