2003 Parris was a 10-year bush warrior before sticking with Cincinnati in 1998. Thirty months later, Gord Ash inked the very same player to a two-year deal worth $6 million. Even before Parris blew out his shoulder, how can you justify paying that amount for an essentially free commodity? Now 35, Parris could tack on a couple more years as a swingman, but like Internet stocks, his market has gone bust. Like alot of things gone bust, Parris has fled to Florida, where at least heíll accrue service time as a Devil Ray.
2002 The Jays were faced with the exodus of 60% of the starting rotation after the 2000 season, as Frank Castillo and Steve Trachsel were free agents, while an angry mob of thin-skinned fans chased Jumbo Wells over the Peace Bridge. In response, Ash traded for and overpaid Parris to be the Blue Jaysí version of the Dutch Boy for two years. No more than a journeyman starter, Parris killed the club all season before labrum and rotator-cuff damage finished him in July. Itís unlikely that heíll pitch at all in 2002.
2001 Steve Parris was the only Red to make it through the year in the rotation. He's become an innings sponge, someone who can make 30 starts and keep you in most of them. He may be better as a swingman, somebody to spot against heavily right-handed teams and use out of the bullpen against other ones. He'll be the Blue Jays' #4 starter.
2000 Parrisís 1999 gives us a chance to illustrate the importance of plate discipline to an offense. Parris made 21 starts and one relief appearance, split evenly against teams in the top and bottom half of their leagues in walks. Against the teams who walked less, Parris was 8-0 with a 3.23 ERA, averaging just over seven innings per start with a 52/18 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 11 starts against the teams that walked more, he was 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA, averaging just over five innings per start with a dead-even 34 walks and 34 strikeouts. Same pitcher, but the teams that didnít walk allowed him to throw two extra innings per start with greater effectiveness. Thatís the advantage being patient gives an offense.

Parris was worked hard by McKeon last year, and has never been able to stay healthy. Heíll be moderately effective as a swingman and make at least one trip to the disabled list.
1999 Similar to Hudek, in that his final stats belie how well he actually pitched. Parris beat up on a lot of bad teams down the stretch, drastically lowering his ERA against Florida, Montreal (twice), and Arizona, with one good start against Houston thrown in. Parris can certainly be an adequate pitcher at the back of a rotation, and the Reds could sorely use a #4 or #5 guy who can eat innings. That's a role Parris could excel at.
1997 He first reached AAA in 1992, but following shoulder surgery found himself back in the A leagues. Heís worked himself back and into the majors, throwing a big curve ball that minor leaguers flail at but major leaguers take. A victim of the postage stamp strike zone.
1996  Reliable middle relief. Gonna be a good pitching staff, unless there's a Dan Plesac stuck in it or something.
