2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)NL only - at what point does Mike Olt become waiver bait? He's down to .151 and not playing much. I own him cheaply but worry he won't ever be a worthy keeper thanks to his putrid BA.
(iorg34 from 80087355)
He already is... a handful of homers can only do so much to save your value (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think about Mike Olt? Will he keep the job all year?
(MattN from Silver Spring)
I've been on the Olt bandwagon for too long to jump off now. The Cubs don't have much reason to not give him at least 400 PA this season - really, only Christian Villanueva could conceivably steal time away from him later in the season. I think he can be a low average, 25 homer guy. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)In need of CI Help (AVG HR STEALS RBI RUNS) best available are: Mike Olt, Lonnie Chisenhall, David Freese, Lucas Duda, Marcus Siemen thank you and I hope the rest of my league RESTS IN PEACEEE
(the Undetaker from Death Valley)
It will never cease to amaze me how many smart people I follow on Twitter like wrestling. For 2014 only, I go Freese, Semien, Chisenhall, Olt, Duda. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Olt or David Freese better season for a CI?
(dancini from Pgh)
I still believe in Olt. (Mark Anderson)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Standard 5x5, who has the better year, Javier Baez or Mike Olt?
(Tommy from Chicago)
Baez, but I haven't buried Olt. (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have any favorite sleepers in the Cubs system? Also, do you think Mike Olt can resurrect his career?
(Duff Man from Shelbyville)
I'm excited about Olt. My friend Sahadev Sharma did some great reporting on Olt's vision issues, and, no pun intended, things have cleared up.
As far as sleepers, it's hard for me to say who would appear to be a sleeper ... Christian Villanueva? Arismendy Alcantara? The aforementioned Olt? If so, those guys. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know Spring Training rarely means much, but are there any guys we should keep a close eye on? To see if they are returning from injury well/keeping gains in control/breaking camp?
(Keith from Brooklyn)
Mike Olt is my de facto pick for "guy to watch in spring training". The Cubs offense is a damn mess and I don't think they can stomach playing Darwin Barney and Luis Valbuena for all that much longer. I think they would love Olt to win the job out of spring. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I really just wash my hands of any expectations I have for Mike Olt on the Cubs this year? .250 and 20 homers seems reasonable..
(Larry S. from Chicago)
That seems reasonable. Don't wash your hands of Olt. There's still something there. He probably should never have been lumped together in the same category as Profar when it came to the future of the Rangers, but he's still going to be a major leaguer of some sort. (Jeff Moore)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Mike, Who is the better keeper in a dynasty league? Olt, Garin Cecchini or Espinosa?
(Chad from OKC)
Hi Chad;

Danny Espinosa? Of the three, I think I like Cecchini. Mike Olt should be solid, but I could see him being good and not great. Cecchini has the higher ceiling in my opinion. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is 3b Mike Olt's to lose this spring?
(Chris from Phoenix)
I don't know if I would go so far as to say the position is his to lose given the catastrophic season he just endured, but he should walk into spring training with a good chance at holding down the job. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Much has been made among CHC fans about their Big 4 prospects(Baez, Almora, Bryant, Soler),which guys in the 5-10 range in their system intrigue you most?Btw, is Olt redeemable?
(Matt from Chicago)
Mike Olt is absolutely redeemable. I still believe in his ability to be a very good everyday player. As for the 5-10 range, I like the progress scouts reported seeing with Dillon Maples this year. The addition of CJ Edwards and having guys like Duane Underwood and Pierce Johnson make for some quality depth outside of the top four guys. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)In your last chat, you stated Javier Baez would not be in a future Cubs line-up, but would be replaced by Mike Olt. Why is that?
(djr from Evanston, Il)
Because the Cubs traded a valuable commodity for Mike Olt, making him the key piece in the deal. Olt is a better prospect than he showed this year, and I think the Cubs believe that as well. Suggesting he would be in a future hypothetical lineup had everything to do with the trade, the proximity to the majors, and his position. It had nothing to do with Baez. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Don't you think that K% could be a huge concern for Mike Olt career?
(Antonio from Canton)
Of course. I expect better from Olt next season. 2013 wasn't pleasant. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know the standard answer on Mike Olt is that he got hit in the head and simply had a bad season. What do you think is really going on? Still profile as an everyday 3B?
(Matt from Chicago)
Well, I discovered this when I went on the radio in Chicago at the trade deadline – the narrative I heard being given was that Olt got hit on the head and that led to his slow start this season. But that's not true. The vision issues he had were legitimate (read here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21288) and the cure was legitimate. After that, I think it became a mental thing. Olt got stuck in a hole early in the season and didn't really ever get right again mentally. With the Cubs not calling him up in September and not sending him to the Fall League, I think that's the right decision. I'd let him go home, clear his mind, and come back with a clean slate in 2014. That's probably the biggest thing for him. I'm still not all that worried. Perhaps he won't be the role 6 player he looked like in 2012, but I do think he's at least a role 5 (average everyday) third baseman with a good glove and power. Even if Olt doesn't turn out, you have to like the haul of Grimm, C.J. Edwards, and Neil Ramirez. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jason. Shouldn't the Cubs have done better than C.J. Edwards and Leury Garcia for Garza? Since the Cubs braintrust knows what they're doing can you describe the ceilings of Edwards and Garcia. Thanks
(mmcd from ottawa)
I...think you're confused. The Cubs got Edwards, Mike Olt, Justin Grimm, and at least one (potentially two) PTBNL for Garza. That's one hell of a haul for less than half a season of Garza. Leury Garcia is a White Sox. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Mike Olt as the Cubs starting 3B in 2014? How about 2015?
(Colin318 from Chicago)
Ideally, yes. I still think Olt is an everyday guy (though more of a role 5 than role 6), and he's a solid defender at third base. I'm interested to see if getting out of this season, clearing his mind, and starting fresh in 2014 helps. He's better than he has shown this year. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Matt Carpenter really this Good? Is Mike Olt really this Bad ?
(Chris from Brewtown)
For the most part, yes. No. (Paul Sporer)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Mike Olt, do you think he turns out to be as much of a whiffer as some others are saying?
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
He has serious swing and miss potential in that swing. I think he will make enough contact to hit in in the .260s. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm not sure if this is available with minor league PitchFX data, but is there any way to tell if Mike Olt is being pitched differently this year than in years past? If he's seeing the same pitch mix but not succeeding, it's reasonable to think this is just an unhealthy year and he'll be due for a bounceback next season. If it has changed, that's slightly more troubling...
(sitrick2 from Minneapolis)
shared this because it's an interesting question ... but not one I can answer. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Mike Olt were brought to Chicago today and were allowed to play every day at 3B for the rest of the year, what's your best guess on what his slash line would look like?
(Mike from Normal)
.220/.300/.325 (Jason Parks)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's going on with Mike Olt?
(Mark from Bethesda)
He's too handsome and it causes his read/reaction skills to suffer, which is made even more complicated by his complicated swing and propensity to struggle against quality breaking stuff. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Bret, how close do you think Allen Webster is to getting a call up? I currently roster Hultzen, Gerrit Cole and Gausman in a dynasty league. I have one pitching slot open that is occupied by Edwin Jackson. Are any others droppable for Webster? Also, Mike Olt is he a continue to hold onto prospect? I am holding Puig, Soler, Baez and Arcia(Twins) currently.
(Mr. Slate from Bedrock)
If he keeps pitching like he has been, it won't be long. But even if he got the call up tomorrow, I wouldn't drop Edwin Jackson for him. Mike Olt is worth holding, but if there's a better use of that spot, I'm not sure you'll miss him all that much if you had to cut bait. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Similar to the Rendon question, will Mike Olt get a shot in Texas as a 1B (over Moreland), OF or as a 3B elsewhere?
(Cody from Cincinnati)
Same as Rendon - 3B elsewhere. Texas has some holes and having Olt as a trade chip could really help fill it. (Bret Sayre)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that it appears the Rangers won't be adding any position players before the season, do you foresee a full-time role for Leonys Martin in center? Or will he split time with Craig Gentry? I assume Jurickson Profar will start the year in AAA. What about Mike Olt?
(Jon from Texas)
I think Gentry still gets some burn. He did well vs. LHP and his D is awesome. I think both start in AAA barring injuries. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Help! Get to keep two of the following: Jose Fernandez; Mike Olt; Mike Zunino; Nick Castellanos; Xander Bogaerts. Thank you.
(nictaclacta from Phoenix)
I *really* like Fernandez, but he's 20 who hasn't passed High-A yet. I have to go with Olt and flip a coin between Bogaerts and Casty, probably leaning Bogy because of SS. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the difference between Brandon Wood and Mike Olt?
(Justin from Czech Republic)
Pitch recognition skills and bat control. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you take for the rest of their respective careers, Mike Olt or Pedro Alvarez?
(Nils from CT)
Olt (Jason Parks)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)After the vetoed Seattle deal, do you think Arizona will accept a lesser deal for Justin Upton or can they kiss and make up with him? It doesn't seem like building a package around Mike Olt is even close to what they were getting.
(Scott from LA)
They say they won't accept less than they would have gotten back in that trade, and since that potential return was revealed publicly, there's some pressure on them to at least match that package. But there's also some extra pressure on them to trade Upton, and Sam and I discussed on the podcast on Friday. Tough to start a season with a guy you've spent the whole winter loudly trying to trade. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Matt Davidson's long-term future at 3B and if so, is this why ARI has turned down offers from the Rangers for J. Upton centered around Mike Olt? Thanks!
(Kristen from Canada)
Funny you should ask about Matt Davidson. The Diamondbacks Top 10 list went up today. The write-up on him suggests he should stick at third base. As far as the Upton/Olt trade aspect of the question, I can't speak to what offers have been made (if any). I can say Upton is under a reasonable contract and should fetch a huge prospect haul if dealt. (Josh Shepardson)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What exactly is the concern surrounding Mike Olt? During the middle of the season, it seemed everyone was talking about him, but now some analysts seem to be tempering their enthusiasm.
(Scrat1 from Richmond)
I am not sure I've seen concern surrounding Olt, though it's possible his impressive showing last year pushed his media image past where his profile would typically dictate? He's a very good prospect -- better defensively than expected -- and I imagine will be a top 25-50 prospect for most. Any specific you've read recently? (Nick Faleris)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Daniel, any truth to the thought that Kinsler may move to 1B so Profar can play at 2B in Arlington? Do you think the Cardinals have a shot at Scutaro? Thanks!
(Chopper from Indy)
One at a time, Chopper!

Starting with Kinsler — that buzz surfaced yesterday, and it's an indication that the Rangers are considering every option to get Profar into their lineup if he earns that job out of spring training. Moving Kinsler to first is a bit tricky, because it leaves Mitch Moreland without a home and blocks Mike Olt, but either of those two could be traded to make it possible. So, yes, I'd say the thought is true, but it's probably not Plan A or B.

The Cardinals met with Scutaro yesterday, so they are certainly in the mix. However, Hank Schulman (a Giants beat writer for the SF Chronicle), tweeted earlier this morning that Scutaro will give the Giants an opportunity to beat any offer: http://sulia.com/channel/san-francisco-giants/f/4c2ca6e3-9ca0-4c48-80a2-6c7e9db46040/?source=twitter (Daniel Rathman)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Mike Olt see playing time this year? Also, what do you expect out of him long term?
(Justin from Chicago)
I see Olt either sharing time at 1B, DH, 3B with the Rangers, or playing everyday at 3B for someone else. I think he's a 55 player; 60 glove, 60 power, maybe a little more, average hit tool. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Mike Olt a Ranger next April?
(Or from Denton)
Yes. (Jason Parks)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jason. Mike Olt is obviously doing great but when I look at his numbers I think of Chris Davis who was the 'Mike Olt' of 2008-2009--an awesome power hitting 3B with a great future in Texas. Could you explain the differences between them and why I shouldn't fear Olt will become Chris Davis? Thank you.
(michaelmcduffe from ottawa)
Approach. Mike Olt has a very advanced approach to hitting, one that Chris Davis lacked. Olt has some miss in his swing, and he will take a pitcher deep into a count so strikeouts will always be a part of the equation, but he also works walks and works himself into favorable hitting conditions/situations. He's a more complete hitter.

He's also a much, much better defensive player. He's a very good prospect. I'd like to see him at the major league level at some point in the near future getting reps in LF, 1B, 3B, and DH. The Rangers have enough ABs to go around and Olt could handle the defensive assignments with a little extra work in the minors. (Jason Parks)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Mike Olt get a call this year to play 1b? Moreland isn't the future in Texas.
(Luke from AZ)
Definitely a possibility. I have him stashed in the CBS AL experts league, though I also own Moreland. I like Moreland and think he's better than most credit him for, but perception is everything. (Derek Carty)
