2010 Have Arm, Will Travel, Vladimir Nunez's autobiography, should be arriving in bookstores soon.
2009 Vladimir NuŮezís return to the major leagues last year after a three-year absence was more a symptom of the Bravesí myriad pitching injuries than a solution to them.
2005 Once a toolsy prospect who had a couple of nice years with the Marlins, Nunez has never developed the command he needs to succeed consistently. So what happens when he's off? Well, he throws a few nasty pitches that never have a prayer of reaching the strike zone, then he takes something off to get the 3-1 pitch over. Major league hitters kind of know that story, and greet him with a barrage of ash and maple. Just speculation, but this guy might need a dash of Leo Mazzone. After signing a minor league deal with Texas, he'll get a pinch of Orel Hershiser instead.
2003 Nunez pulled ahead early in the closer race with the Marlins, but his six blown saves by the All-Star break got him kicked off the island, and he didnít record a save after July 21. Heís probably better suited to a less restrictive role in any case, since heís effective in multi-inning appearances and is good for 100 innings a season. Heíll be pitching setup in 2003.
2002 Like Looper, Nunez got his act together against lefties last season, holding them to a .213/.290/.356 line. It appears that he's settled in as a reliever, having pitched very well in that role from May onward. He's just another reason for the Fish to ditch Alfonseca and use the other arms in their pen to pitch the ninth inning. Some day in 2003, Brad Penny is going to throw seven shutout innings, Vlad Nunez is going to come in and set the middle of a lineup down 1-2-3, and Abraham Nunez is going to hit a two-run home run, all for a 3-0 win. On that same day, Matt Mantei is going be on the disabled list.
2001 Itís high time to make a decision. While Vladimir Nunezís only major-league success has been in relief, he desperately wants to start. He likes to vary his arm angles and to pitch backwards like his idol, Orlando Hernandez, but the Marlins feel he doesnít need to rely on deception and would improve his command if he threw from a consistent arm slot. Nunez will be given another audition for the rotation in spring training, but I expect him to wind up in the bullpen, where he can junk his inconsistent soft stuff and better maintain his focus.
2000 The split by teams you see above is also a reflection of how he pitched as a reliever (effectively, with Arizona) and a starter (poorly, with Florida). He stranded 17 of 18 inherited runners, an amazing rate. Nunezís future is as a reliever; itís a role that suits him and fits the Marlinsí needs better as well. Like Looper, he scuffles against left-handed hitters.
1999 Nunez started the year being babied because of a mild elbow strain, but pitched well upon his return. Fastball/curveball mix, working on adding a changeup. High upside, although his opportunities for 1998 took a turn for the worse after the pitcher signings. Would be a prime candidate for Connorization (tm pending) in a long relief role.
