2009 So desperate were the Mets that they bought Trot Nixon from Arizona in mid-June to replace Church in right; he didn't hit (again), and got hurt (again), so at least he's consistent. The Brewers decided he was nevertheless worth a minor league deal this winter.
2008 After a decade with the Red Sox, Nixon moved to Cleveland on a one-year deal and promptly proved that he's pretty much done, posting career lows in numerous offensive categories when nursing an assortment of injuries. Nixon always needed a platoon partner to hit the left-handers for him, but now he can't hit righties, either. He does have some on-base skills, and his resum? will get him another chance, but his prime is now five years in his rearview mirror, and in this one objects are actually further away than they appear.
2007 For a fan favorite in his walk year, Nixon had a rough go. Slowed by a groin strain, he still hit .311/.415/.455 in the first half--short in the power department, the result of less leg in his swing, but still a performance to be reckoned with. Things fell apart from there; Nixon missed all of August with a Grade 2 biceps strain and a scary staph infection. Upon returning, he hit just .147/.266/.250 in September, hardly an advertisement for his next contract. Whether he returns to Boston for a farewell tour or signs elsewhere, he won`t be critical to anyone`s plans given his injury history, but he can still be useful in a reduced role.
2006 Nixon had a terrible September, but Boston`s lack of a reliable backup put him in the lineup against left-handers, who all might as well be Lefty Grove to Trot. The question with Nixon is whether his off-year was symptomatic of his injuries or represented an actual decline in his skills. For many people in New England, he is the symbol of the gritty guy with the dirty uniform, in contrast to Manny Ramirez, team space case. But Nixon is similarly prone to the occasional baserunning or defensive gaffe, and he spends part of ever year on the DL. If Nixon can get healthy, he may have another 2003 in him. If it isn`t this year, he likely won`t be in Boston in 2007.
2005 It seemed at times that Nixon was trying to relive every past injury from his career all in one season, missing most of the first half with a disc injury and much of the second with a quad tear. In the 149 ABs he did manage, Nixon hit very well, right in line with his three previous seasons, a good sign considering the severity of those maladies. Nixon has quietly become one of the best right fielders in the AL when healthy; the Sox would greatly benefit from 450 healthy plate appearances.
2003 At times, Nixon looks like a budding star. He practically carried the team in July, hitting .330/.392/.661 with 24 runs and 29 RBI. Nevertheless, two extended slumps kept his overall production well below the mark he set in 2001. Though he saw action in a career-high 152 games, essentially playing full-time, Nixon continues to hit very poorly against lefties. A platoon might make sense if the Red Sox could find a right-handed fourth outfielder with the necessary defensive range to handle Fenway’s deep right field.
2002 The bright spot in Boston’s 2001 season was almost totally obscured by the light-sucking effects of the general meltdown, but Nixon’s age-27 season had him finally arriving as a major-league hitter. Playing every day helped, and Nixon can still take another step up if he learns from the new experience against lefties and starts to hit them for more than a 604 OPS. He still has some room to grow and should make an All-Star team or two in the next few years.
2001 Trot Nixon was again unable to play a full season, courtesy of a hamstring pull that kept him out for a month and occasional aches and pains. More aggravating to Sox fans was Jimy Williams's insistence on sitting Nixon against left-handers in favor of nonentity Darren Lewis. Nixon didn’t even play against the Mark Mulders and Randy Keislers, so it’s not as if he was getting to practice against weak left-handers so he could build up his skills. In the case for firing Jimy Williams, this is Exhibit A.
2000 If a player could win Comeback Player of the Year as a rookie, Nixon might have done it. He started the year in a horrible funk, hitting .105/.209/.263 in April, but rebounded to hit .296/.389/.587 after the All-Star break. Nixon needs to start hitting left-handers, but didn't get much of a chance in 1999: just 43 at-bats. It will be interesting to see what Nixon, having made the adjustment to the majors, can do in 2000.
1999 Maybe the nagging back injuries are gone, because he finally had the breakthrough year that's been expected of him. He and Abad were both 20/20 players in Pawtucket, but Nixon got there first. Well rounded - hits well, runs well, throws well. He was on the post-season roster, demonstrating the club's confidence in his maturity level, and may be handed a starting job in spring training.
1998 One of the more overrated prospects in baseball. Nixon has more tools than Home Depot, but he uses them about as well as the government uses tax revenues. His back troubles have damaged his game as well. As the Sox’ #1 pick in 1993, he’ll get plenty of chances to embarrass himself in the majors.
1997 The back injury that ruined his 1994 season has apparently had a residual effect. Nixon still has good plate discipline, but no longer hits for power. This has killed his prospect status, and with the hitters ahead of him, he’ll be hard-pressed to get it back.
