2013 Drafted as a shortstop in the first round in 2004, Nelson has been slow to develop. He spent most of last season at third base, where he hit enough for the position but didn't play great defense. Nelson landed on the DL in mid-July due to an irregular heartbeat that he attributed to “too much caffeine, dehydration, and stress.” After returning to the lineup three weeks later, he hit .345 with power over his final 53 games. His minor-league record suggests this is a small-sample fluke, but Nelson is at the right age for a sudden leap forward, although he never will be a coffee achiever.
2012 Nelson, taken as a shortstop in the first round of the 2004 draft, now plays second and third base, and is a mediocre defender at both positions. At the plate, he has shown occasional power in the minors but struggles to differentiate between balls and strikes. If Nelson tightens up his zone and improves his defense, he could stick for a while as part of a big-league bench.
2011 The ninth overall pick way back in 2004, Nelson had his best plate performance since rookie ball in his Triple-A debut last year. Of course, the oft-injured shortstop missed a month with an oblique strain before he actually made that debut. He also did most of his hitting in a two-month span across June and July and hit just .283/.337/.428 away from Colorado Springs. Still, after getting his first taste of the majors in 2010 and making three starts at the keystone in the season’s final week, Nelson has at long last thrust himself into a battle for a big-league job. His odds of winning it grew longer after the acquisition of Jose Lopez.
2010 Oft-injured top pick Chris Nelson got off to a good start in his second attempt to improve his defense and master Double-A, but a bum wrist ended his year before he could rekindle his prospect flame.
2009 Former top pick Chris Nelson hit a wall at Double-A, but the Rockies still have faith in his athleticism, a belief reinforced by signs of life in the Arizona Fall League.
2008 Getting Nelson with the ninth overall pick in the 2004 draft seemed like a steal at the time. Then he made 66 errors and drew 57 walks in two Sally League seasons. At best, he's a utility infielder in the majors, and it's an open question as to whether he can climb the three levels to become even that. His 2007 line is a California League mirage.
2007 Remember, if Nelson had gone to college, he`d still be a potential top draft pick this season. After a great 2004 and terrible 2005, he may have found his level this year, but it`s still well short of actual prospectdom.
