2013 Pittsburgh acquired Navarro on the eve of the 2011 Rule 5 draft from Kansas City for two minor leaguers. The reaction to the trade favored the Pirates. Navarro seemed destined to become a solid utility infielder thanks to his defensive flexibility and a modicum of power. But that didn't happen. In fact, Navarro rarely played for the Pirates in the majors despite a solid season at Indianapolis. Given Pittsburgh's surplus of utility-infielder types, they traded him to the Orioles in the offseason. With Baltimore he'll compete for a bench role and/or serve as organizational depth. His opportunity to capitalize on his potential may have passed.
2012 Traded once at the deadline (from Boston to Kansas City) and then again not even six months later (from Kansas City to Boston), Navarro possesses quick hands and modest power aspirations at the plate. In the field, his athleticism plays up at a number of positions, making him a prime candidate to become a utility infielder. With Clint Barmes and Neil Walker entrenched at shortstop and second base, expect Navarro to spend quality time on the bench, and for Pittsburgh to benefit from his presence.
2011 Navarro is the kind of player you expect to see on a major-league roster come September, but he made it to Boston in mid-August with Eric Patterson on the disabled list and Dustin Pedroia unable to return. Navarro was greener than a yuppie in a hybrid, and did little to curb to the lack of production from second base to close out the year. The 22-year-old mustered a 772 OPS at Double-A Portland and even smashed three homers in 58 at-bats in Pawtucket, but as a result of sharing a system with stud prospect Jose Iglesias, Navarro may already be on the utility-infielder career path.
2010 Navarro had strong showings at the plate in partial seasons at High-A in both 2008 and 2009, hitting .338/.386/.520 in the two stints combined, but he pancaked upon being promoted to Double-A last year. Heís just 22 and a solid defender at shortstop, a position the Red Sox have long struggled to fill, but heíll need his bat to come around at the upper levels to stay ahead of Jose Iglesiasís outstanding defensive work.
2009 Defensively gifted shortstop Yamaico Navarro can be overly aggressive at the plate, but he managed to drop his punchouts a bit at Lancaster in 2008. His walks also fell though, and much of his slugging bump was just batting average. Luckily, he has a swing that generates liners, so expect at least doubles power in his future.
2008 Yomaico Navarro is another of the plethora of impressive young Latin American talents in the Red Sox' system. He has plenty of tools and can play anywhere in the infield. If there's one knock against him, it's that, at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, he's a little small.

(Jeff Spicoli from Ridgemont High)
Gnarly! I like Navarro plenty, but he's not perfect. Dude can really hit, but he has below average secondary skills, and defensively he's might be a little short in the range department. (Kevin Goldstein)
