2003 They liked him enough to pick up his 2003 option, so they must want the situational lefty back. It’s not often that a pitcher leaves Coors Field and sees his ERA spike. He’ll continue to fill the 80 appearance/50 inning role out of the pen for the Diamondbacks. What do advance scouts do when it comes to someone like this? Is there really an update to the scouting report that needs to be made?
2002 He's good at what he does, with a ridiculous sidearm motion that makes him very hard on left-handed batters. That doesn't make him worth Jack Cust and J.D. Closser, which is what the Diamondbacks traded to get him. Joe Garagiola Jr. has done a good job in picking free agents, but he's dealt Cust, Closser, Tony Batista, Brad Penny, and Vlad Nunez for three short relievers. That's a brutal record. Given what we know about the two players, that Ray Lankford hit a home run off of Myers is one of last year's more random occurrences.
2001 Life as a situational lefty has its moments. What other kind of pitcher can approach three months without allowing a run, as Mike Myers did? Ryan Klesko ended that streak on July 1 with a home run. Myers has an especially funky sidearm delivery and is one of the best situational relievers in baseball. In a division with Barry Bonds, that’s going to be important.
2000 He struggled with a slow start, but unlike 1998, he wasn't overused in the first half and finished strong. In November, he was traded to the Rockies for Curtis Leskanic. As a sidearming left-hander, he's an extreme specialist, and pitching in Coors won't help him. The Brewers traded him at the right time, since he's arbitration-eligible: Myers is useful, but not worth paying through the nose to keep.
1999 Although the Brewers’ miserable total of complete games (a NL-record low of two) was interpreted as a weakness, it wasn’t like Garner had to leave his starter out there. He had good middle relievers for the bulk of the season, his closer was only a problem as long as it was Doug Jones, and why leave the starters on the mound when he had an excellent lefty like Myers? Trading Florie to get Myers worked, because Florie’s looking like waiver bait, while Myers is the front man for an organization awash in quality lefty relievers at a time when everyone wants one. On the down side, Garner has to learn when to pick his spots; he used Myers in 28 of the Brewers’ first 53 games, and that wore him down.
1998 Still learning. Myers has solid stuff, and I think he’ll eventually end up as a very effective one-batter left-hander. He just can’t get right-handers out—Myers is the sort of guy that Mike Bordick hits his annual home run off of. Over his career, the average right-handed hitter has hit about like Bobby Higginson against him.
1997 Almost a mirror image of Richie Lewis. Another Marlin refugee, Myers had some control problems but was still the second-best reliever on the team. He appeared in more games (83) than any pitcher since 1987. It was only his second season as a reliever, and Myers struck out over a man an inning; any left-hander who can accomplish that has to be taken seriously. Held lefties to a .229 average. If you’re in a roto league and looking for cheap saves, keep him in mind.
1996  Well, now we know what he does between "Halloween" movies.
