BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 After going 5-10 with a 5.73 ERA starting for Syracuse, hard-throwing journeyman lefty Bill Murphy was moved to the pen and became unhittable while striking out 19 in 13 2/3 innings.
2008 Maybe it's a reflection of Murphy's ambiguous role on a pitching staff and in the organization, but some people think he might make a good pitching coach. Teams seem to want him-he's been packaged in three major trades on his career, coming to Arizona in the deal that sent Steve Finley to L.A.-but where he fits is an open question. If a staff needed a lefty utility pitcher, Murphy would do, as he's got a decent fastball for a southpaw, works in a good curveball and change to keep hitters off balance, and gets good marks for his aptitude. But how many lefty utility pitchers do you see these days?
2007 Bill Murphy responded to being taken off of the 40-man roster by doing some good work both starting and relieving, but his fastball-curve combo doesn`t seem suited for a situational job in the majors.
2006 His strikeout rate has been nearly cut in half since his final year at Cal State Northridge. That`s especially troubling considering his walk rate, which remains just as high. Being a pitcher in the Diamondbacks minor league system is difficult enough when you have two or three weaknesses, but Murphy is having to work on just about everything. It was downright tragic that his reconstruction began with a trip to the bruising, high-offense Arizona Fall League, but he was surprisingly successful there despite the offensive environment: a 36:4 K/BB ratio in just over 27 innings. Short-term success in the AFL aside, he`s in the wrong organization to work through a control problem.

2008-08-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Blue Jays' move of Bill Murphy to starter seemed to work well early, but Murphy now seems to be fading. Does he have a future as either a starter or reliever in the Majors?
(Dave from Petaluma, CA)
I think at most, he'll be some kind of up and down guy. (Kevin Goldstein)
