BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 When Scott Munter was pitching for the Giants in the middle of the last decade, he struck out 2.8 batters per nine innings. To the sinkerballer's credit, he steadily improved that mark on a tour through the nation's minor league systems, and 2011 was his first year punching out a batter per inning in the minors. He's 31, though.
2008 Munter illustrates the point that a great sinker that gets pounded into the ground isn't always enough. His fantastic ground-ball rates are paired with more walks than strikeouts-59 passes and 41 whiffs above Double-A in his career. He's a free agent, and while that one pitch is nasty, there's little evidence that it will be enough to make him a major league reliever.
2007 Munter throws a sinker that terrorizes miners, sewermen, Morlocks, CHUDs . . . but that`s all he throws, again and again. Munter never strikes anyone out; he just wants you to beat the pitch into the ground, preferably by chasing a pitch that`s already on the ground. That works if he gets you to two strikes and you have to swing, but hitters quickly learned to take those pitches for balls and force him to come up in the zone.
2006 Munter throws a heavy split-fingered fastball that dives hard and burrows until it strikes something valuable, like oil or a woodchuck hoarding czarist rubles. This led to 2005`s fifth-highest G/F ratio, and makes Munter quite good at inducing double plays. But even bowling with that splitter, you`d like to see Munter miss bats occasionally; his strikeout rate is absurdly low. Last word at press time is that Munter`s scoped elbow will be fine in time for camp.
