2014 A one-time catching prospect, Moore is now classified as organizational filler. He once had power potential, but hasn’t slugged double-digit home runs in a season since 2009. He has missed his fair share of time with an assortment of ailments, and a torn groin short-circuited Moore’s Triple-A season. He was removed from the 40-man roster last summer, but was then signed by the Royals to a contract that runs through 2014. New paper aside, it would be surprising to see him for an extended period of time in the big leagues.
2013 A surprise waiver claim from the Seattle organization, Moore was the fourth catcher on the Royals 40-man roster. Once upon a time he held promise as a power-hitting backstop, but now he feels like organizational filler. The Royals are a reactionary team. They lost their top two catchers last year in spring training and had to go outside the organization for the disaster known as Humberto Quintero. So they've decided to stock their roster with surplus catching. Don't confuse surplus with quality.
2012 ... and then one day you wake up and your age 27 season is just gone. You go to bed earlier, but you're always still tired. There's nothing left to feel ambitious about. What did you even accomplish this year? Nothing. Not a thing. A week of playing time, a torn medial meniscus, surgery, a bunch of rehab, another year gone. The biggest thing, though, is nobody treats you like you're special anymore. And, as much as it hurts to admit it, you're not special. You're just a guy, a guy trying to hit just one ball a week like you did when you were 22. If you could just do that, the rest of the grind would be tolerable.
2011 The big leagues proved to be more than Moore could handle in his rookie season, but his performance in the high minors (a combined .309/.391/.489 in Double-A and .302/.350/.439 in Triple-A, both in roughly a full season’s worth of plate appearances) suggests that he’s capable of far better. A knee injury and subsequent hamstring strain knocked the righty out of commission from mid-May through early August, and he hit no better after healing. Even his defense seemed to lose something in translation from Tacoma, as the righty threw out only 19 percent of attempted basestealers, roughly half the rate he’d managed in the minors as his technique behind the plate improved over the past two seasons. The good news/bad news for Moore is that he is now blocked by the powerful Miguel Olivo. The latter brings his 2008-2010 .462 slugging percentage to Seattle, but also the .296 OBP he compiled in the same period. Olivo is ill-suited to Safeco, which is tough on right-handed power, and it's worth noting that he hit only .211/.276/.322 away from Coors Field. Despite the Mariners' two-year commitment to Olivo, Moore need only bide his time.
2010 Moore has always been above average offensively for his position, with a decent batting average and gap power, but his defense has improved leaps and bounds over the last two years. He's become more agile behind the plate while starting to figure out how to turn his plus arm into a legitimate weapon for running-game deterrence. While the signing of veteran placeholder Josh Bard and Rob Johnson's claim on the job might consign Moore to another stretch in Tacoma. That said, it isn't like Moore's up against Elston Howard and Yogi Berra, so the right combination of events (injuries, a good camp, managerial preference) could put Moore into the role of first among equals in a group of interchangeably OK receivers.
2009 Moore is a prized rarity in baseball, now and forever: a slugging catching prospect. He duplicated his breakout '07 at a higher level last season, and overhauled his defensive technique under the tutelage of roving catching instructor Roger Hansen, who gave him high marks. Moore's strong arm, game-calling, and work ethic should keep him behind the plate, although he's big for a catcher, and has already survived one knee surgery. In a less catching-rich organization, he'd be a bigger name, but he deserves any hype he can get.
2008 You temper your enthusiasm when a 23-year-old puts up big power numbers in the California League, especially when that guy is a catcher who might not have the skills to stay behind the plate like Adam Moore. We'll know more once he's in Double-A

Tyler Flowers seems like the only one with legitimate upside out of those guys. And please don't tell me Adam Moore is still going to see playing time. (Jeremy Greenhouse)
