2010-08-17 14:45:00 (link to chat)Posey, Huff, Torres, after Molina, Renteria, and Sandoval recently. When will I get credit for my offensive prowess and not just derided for my oopsies?
(Brian Sabean from San Francisco)
Are you suggesting that you deserve credit for signing Bengie Molina and Edgar Renteria? Because if so, you just answered your own question. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-17 14:45:00 (link to chat)Say what you want about Bengie Molina, but boy can he handle a pitching staff. He's done wonders for the Texas club. He can call a game, handle a young starter, hit ya a cycle, just a multifaceted veteran presence. Good in the clubhouse. Jon Daniels has put together a nice club down there in Texas. Club.
(John Hart from Texas)
John Hart -- I love you. Nobody makes me feel as warm on TV. Even if you do say the word "club" 8000 times an hour. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you lean toward the Yankee side of town, but what's next for the Mets? The core of Wright-Reyes-Beltran-Santana brought them only one deep playoff run. Put on your Omar hat for a second: Blow it up? Build around Wright/Reyes?
(Gino Felino from Brooklyn)
I won't put on my Omar hat because if I owned the Mets, Omar wouldn't have a head, which is to say that I'd probably make a change based on the Luis Castillo deal alone, never mind Oliver Perez. Castillo was an easy first-guess mistake, Perez probably had some chance of working out, not a good one, but a chance. Signing Jason Bay just to seem like they were doing something despite the poor fit was also a predictable misfire, and the panting pursuit of Bengie Molina just pathetic. In fairness to Minaya, we really don't know how much he's dancing on ownership's string, and it does seem pretty likely that all that Madoff business affected the club in some way. The farm system has been dead, and that's a big problem... If you "blow it up" but keep Wright and Reyes (which they should), what do you really have to trade? (Steven Goldman)
2010-07-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the prospect Michael Main, that the Giants got in the Bengie Molina deal.
(Brian from SF)
In BP 2010, we wrote, "One of the highest high-ceiling arms in the system, athletic righty Michael Main suffered through most of 2009 with an undiagnosed illness, but he's healthy and expected to be back to form this spring." The 90+ innings he's throw in the California League this season seem to bear out that statement, but we'll see how he survives the AA crucible. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love the fact that the Rangers are winning, but is Ron Washington not the worst game manager in baseball? I mean David Murphy in the 3 hole, Bengie Molina batting betweeen Hamilton and Nellie Cruz. I know that he's a "player's" manager and all, but you could see the disgust in Hambone's face when Wash bunted Molina to get to Cruz after a leadoff double...ok done ranting...thoughts?
(ramjam36 from Fort Worth, Tx)
I haven't seen enough of his day-to-day nature to know if he's a problem in that sense, but I've heard some odd things about sac bunts and lineup placement this year. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)As a Giants fan, can I please use this chat to introduce the rumor that the Red Sox want to trade for Bengie Molina?
(ted from the cubicle)
Hey, I just heard from a baseball source deep inside my head that the Red Sox are willing to trade Kevin Youkilis to the Giants for Bengie Molina! How about that for a rumor-starter? (John Perrotto)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)I understand that players are graded on an 80-20 scale. That said, can you name some players and some skills that would break that scale? For example, Would Bengie Molina's speed score a, like, 5?
(Brendan from Chicago)
It's referred to as the 20-80 scale, and you can't break the scale dammit! You have 20 hitting ability, for example. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Washburn and the Mets: Is an unreasonable Boras salary demand (is there any other kind?) holding up what seems like a great fit for player and team? Washburn's not great but I find it hard to believe he'll just retire when he can just find a nice big NL ballpark and munch some innings for a nice paycheck.
(Tex Premium Lager from NJ)
Did you ever think you'd seen an offseason where the Mets were so desperate it was constantly, "OMG!!! We might get Bengie Molina!!!" "OMG!!! We got Rod Barajas!!!" Jarrod Washburn is another banana from the same bunch, filler for a team that seems pretty certain to crash on the launchpad. You're right, though, that if there's a place where Washburn best fits it's in a situation like this one. (Steven Goldman)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you talk me in or should I just jump?
(DDriesen from Mets fan - On the ledge)
I could try to talk you down, but I understand if you gotta jump.

Since the season ended I've seen nothing about the Mets that makes me have any shred of confidence in their decision making process or their medical staff. Well, maybe the fact that they didn't sign Bengie Molina to a five-year deal... (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-19 15:30:00 (link to chat)Bengie Molina re-signs with the Giants for 1 year. This seems like a disaster all around. Who's a worse GM, Sabean or Minaya?
(Rob from Alaska)
I think the Mets got saved from their own stupidity. Any time a team spends half its offseason chasing a guy with a .300 OBP, you really have to ask what the heck they're thinking. As for the Giants, they get a familiar face who is lame but allows them not to force Buster Posey's schedule. That's the best face I can put on the Giants' end of it, anyway. We ask some hard questions about Sabean in the Giants chapter of the annual. I'd rather have Sabean rather than Minaya, not because I think he has any great insights, but because I think Minaya not only lacks them, he's shown an astounding lack of character, particularly during the Tony Bernazard imbroglio. (Steven Goldman)
2009-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Mets pay whatever it takes to sign Chapman? Would make up for no 1st round pick this year and lack of high level prospects. Seems a better risk/reward than blowing $12 million on Bengie Molina and $65 million to watch Jason Bay grow old.
(pjfsks from new jersey)
Dunno about whatever it takes, but yes if the cost is reasonable as it would help cover for the system's weaknesses, not to mention the shagginess of those potential free agent dogs. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming the Giants could even absorb the extra payroll, would Posey & Bumgarner be too much to give up for Cabrera?
(Rob from Oakland)
Yes, especially given the cost, the surrendering of a top-tier catching prospect, and Cabrera's track record of, well, staying out of shape. It would seem to be more in their wheelhouse to revisit those Cain-Fielder discussions and see what comes from that. Given Posey's potential, the question becomes, would you rather have Bengie Molina and Miguel Cabrera or Buster Posey and either Nick Johnson or Russell Branyan? I'd spring for the latter. (Eric Seidman)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Buster Posey will be the Giants opening day catcher next season? If so do you think he and the Panda could be Morneau/Maur lite?
(brianpekrul from San Francisco)
That's not a bad upside comp, although it may be a little underselling just what Joe Mauer is, how far above Posey he is. If Posey isn't the Giants' catcher next year, starting 120 times, it's a pretty big mistake. Bring back Bengie Molina if you have to, but in Jose's role. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which current MLB hitter would get the fewest # of wins in our scenario? John MacDonald? Matt Stairs?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Bengie Molina. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bengie Molina> Maybe you forgot that Yunicorn Betancourt is actually on a MLB roster?
(Keith from KC)
Picture the outfield defense. Or the infield defense, for that matter. Seven Molinas behind the pitcher would yield, what, a .400 DER? Lower? (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why is Bengie Molina still playing and batting 4th?
(JJ from NYC)
He's playing because the Giants need somebody to prevent the ball from rolling to the backstop when Lincecum, Cain et al throw. There's no reason for him to fit fourth in a major league lineup, and as soon as he finds himself in one, I expect he'll be moved lower. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)As of the submission of this question Pablo Sandoval has seven walks in his last ten games. Fluke, or a sign that Pablo may be able to add a little patience to his approach now that pitchers aren't throwing him strikes?
(Jake from S.F.)
He's young enough to learn, no question. Locker him across the room from Bengie Molina, though. Maybe even in the visitor's cubhouse. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, Who would you take if the best catching options left were Bengie Molina or Jorge Posada?
(Paul from Miami,OH)
Posada. PECOTA is overstating his decline a bit, given he missed with an injury last year. He may not be the Posada of old, but Molina isn't the greatest catcher around either. (Marc Normandin)
2008-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Following up on jsmoore (dallas), in your opinion, who should the Red Sox target to catch next season?
(mattymatty from Philly)
Well, they'll no doubt talk to the Rangers. As a one-year patch, I could love with Bengie Molina, although I suspect the Giants will overprice him in trade. Ramon Castro might be part of a solution. Too late to get Chris Iannetta, I guess. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Since the Yankees are looking for a "cheap" catcher under contract for next year, is it possible that they would deal for Bengie Molina? The Giants also have an outfielder (Randy Winn) to fill the Matsui role.
(Chris from IA)
The Yankees really need a left-handed batter with some OBP to platoon with Jose. They have to add some offense, and I wouldn't gamble on Bengie's career year continuing in the AL. The fit is Zaun or Melhuse or Saltalamacchia...just someone to get the .220 OBP out of the lineup. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I thought you were pretty hard on the Yanks in the last TA. With that said, they do have to find a catcher, and it won't be easy. Any theories or recommendations?
(G-MOTA from Bumpus, MA)
I was indeed, basically for dramatic effect, but let's face it, Jose Molina's the current incarnation of bad Bomber backup backstops. What makes it worse is that there are so few options to go out and get to repair the problem, and there are rivals for any catcher available by trade (notably the Marlins). When the prize is someone like Bengie Molina, and the more likely alternatives are guys like Paul Lo Duca or Ramon Hernandez, the magnitude of the problem becomes apparent. The danger is overpaying for a guy like Gerald Laird, but at least he'd be under team control for the next two years. (Christina Kahrl)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneMoneyball16 (Calgary): Am I the only one already sick of Buck talking about how deep and balanced the Rangers lineup is? They have Frenchy, Cantu, Molina and Andrus in a row FFS! Still a nice lineup, but it sure isn't deep and balanced.

I don't even think Bengie Molina could balance himself if Frenchy, Cantu, and Andrus were on all sides of him helping out. (Eric Seidman)
2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneJeff Francoeur and Bengie Molina will be available for a photo op outside the Rangers' clubhouse after the game in which they will both raise the middle finger to all of us participating in this chat. (John Perrotto)
2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day One"Bengie Molina is a clutch hitter." It's the knowledge that life provides exasperations for the stathead that lead me to expect some results. Frenchy and Bengie? Of course! (Christina Kahrl)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableJquinton82 (NY): Heres a few topics: 1) Madison Bumgarner's missing velocity 2) First top 25 prospect to get called up, who & when? 3) The next Jimmy Rollins is...? 4) Word association - Yogi Berra ...discuss amongst yourselves

1) Either he's hurt, or he left it in his other pants. Like lost car keys, missing velocity is always in the last place you look.

2) Well, with Jason Heyward, Neftali Feliz, Brian Matusz and Alcides Escobar breaking camp, this doesn't seem like that big a deal, but I'll go with Buster Posey, May 9, after Bengie Molina sprains some fat.

3) ...taller than Rollins and hopefully blessed with a better OBP.

4) Provider of great book titles by cool people, including our own It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over and friend Emma Span's 90% of The Game Is Half Mental, which is one of this spring's funniest baseball books.

Speaking of Yogi, I read a quote the other day that was attributed to him: "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is." Alas, that quote has also been attributed to one Johannes "Jan" L. A. van de Snepscheut, a Dutch computer scientist who taught at Caltech before bludgeoning his wife to death with an axe in 1994.

So there's a happy tale. (Jay Jaffe)
