BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2006 The pre-season favorite for the right field job, Mohr tanked, a startling development considering his change in home parks. He`s still only 30, kills southpaws, and his defense is decent, so he`ll land a job somewhere, probably rebound a bit, and get named the player most likely to be the next Greg Colbrunn by the Greg Colbrunn Fan Club.
2005 An impressive season, which makes you wonder why the Giants needed to forfeit a high draft pick for two years of Michael Tucker. Yes, we've established that they purposely forfeited the pick, figuring the risk to not be worth the cost of a signing bonus. But is the small degree of likelihood that Tucker's mediocrity will hold up against a younger outfielder with a shorter track record but equal or better ability really worth giving up the upside of a well-drafted prep or collegian? If the Giants hit one out of ten picks right, it's a bad proposition, and even a blindfolded Syd Thrift could hit .100. Arbitration-eligible, the Giants' concerns over his biceps injury and the dubious odds of a repeat '04 earned him a non-tender. The Rockies scooped him up, which instantly makes him a roto sleeper.
2003 The Twins don’t “just” get their talent from the draft, they also go shopping once in a while. They grabbed Mohr after his release by the Indians in spring training in 2000, eventually turning him into a useful spare outfielder. He did fall on his face over the last two months, and with his reputation as a mistake hitter, he probably just had the best season he’s going to have.
2002 Mohr enjoyed a breakout year in New Britain, pounding 68 extra-base hits for the Rock Cats. He's solid defensively on the outfield corners but can't play center field, so he'll need to light up Triple-A early and often to have a chance in what promises to be a crowded corner-outfield situation in Minneapolis.

DateQuestionAnswer
2005-03-21 19:30:00 (link to chat)Brad Hawpe crushes Dustan Mohr in PECOTA-land (and VORP-land too). How much of a battle is it? And why did they sign Mohr? Especially since the Rockies seem to have pledged to go with Generation R?
(dcbove from Albany, NY)
For the curious, Mohr's projected at .277/365/475 according to his PECOTA weighted mean, while Hawpe's seen as .288/.359/.549. Hawpe's shown some solid power in his minor league career, though largely in high-offense climates. Mohr on the other hand put up a moderate-power/impressive OBP season in the pitcher's environment of SBC Park (which if I'm not mistaken played a bit more as a hitter's park last year). Mohr also has injury concerns with his arm.

I'd give Hawpe the bulk of the playing time and use Mohr as a 4th outfielder in the Jason Michaels mold, fully capable of starting for a few weeks at a time (actually Michaels should be the starting CF in Philly, but that's another story). (Jonah Keri)
