BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 At this point, any good news about Mitchell will be welcome, so here's some: Some of the raw tools that made him a first-round pick in 2009 showed up in Double-A last year, and his walk rate was fantastic. Mitchell has speed, a center fielder’s range, power enough for moderate home-run numbers, and plenty of extra-base hits. However, he won't hit enough to be a starter if he doesn't figure out how to make better contact. Given his other tools, making enough contact to hit .250 would make him an asset. Of course, in the context of his recent past, even playing his way into a reserve role would be great news.
2012 Ouch. A two-sport star at LSU, Mitchell was considered a raw talent when the Sox made him their first round pick three years ago, but after one season lost to unfortunate injury and another lost to unfortunate hackery, he’s now considered a raw semi-talent. Mitchell has tremendous speed and power potential but has yet to translate those tools into actual performance, and never will if he continues to whiff in over a third of his plate appearances. The Sox are willing to chalk last year up to rust and the burden of high expectations, but if Mitchell—already 23 and still inexperienced—can’t get this battleship turned around quickly his career will be sunk before it gets started.
2011 High expectations have had to be put on hold for the 2009 first-round pick out of LSU. That's because Mitchell effectively missed the entire season after hitting a wall making a catch in spring training and damaging a tendon in his ankle, which required surgery to repair. After getting a clean bill of health, the first action he saw came in the Arizona Fall League, where he struggled, striking out 30 percent of the time without doing much damage in a hitter's circuit. Even so, don't get too hung up on the poor performance: Mitchell is as toolsy as they come, but was also very raw from the day he was drafted. He needs reps he hasn't gotten yet, so it's too soon to get too down or up on a guy who only just turned 22.
2010 Mitchell saved his best for last; too bad it came after the draft. The 23rd overall pick last June, if the draft was a week later he might have made himself another million, as he earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the College World Series right after his selection. No college player could match Mitchell's tools and athleticism, but for a guy coming off of three years at a major program, he's still very raw, as he spent more time focusing on football than baseball during his first two years at LSU. The swing-and-miss in his game is a very real concern, but no player in the White Sox system can match his ceiling.

2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jared Mitchell - small sample size illusion or toolsy player who is finally healthy and has finally figured it all out? Thanks.
(GrinnellSteve from Grinnell)
Mitchell isn't the player the White Sox drafted out of LSU. Way back then he was a freakish athlete that had tools galore and drew comps to Kenny Lofton. Today, he's more of a left fielder with some thump in his bat and a bench profile; still a useful player, but not the guy his AFL numbers may be suggesting. (Mark Anderson)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you seen anyone in the instructional league on the White Sox that we might have reason to get excited about? The state of the Sox' farm system leaves us looking for the merest glimmers of hope.
(GrinnellSteve from Grinnell)
I watched the White Sox's advanced instructional roster, and they have several hard throwers. The positional side was a little shaky, although highly athletic. Jared Mitchell looks great in a uniform. (Jason Parks)
