YearComment
2013 Itís not uncommon for groundball rates to disappear when sinkerballers move up the minor-league system, as advanced hitters do a better job of shrinking the strike zone and hammering mistakes. Thatís what has happened to Mitchell, a slight right-hander who went to Seattle in the Ichiro trade. After dropping with each promotion, his groundball rate reached a new low once he joined Tacoma, and while heíll limit fly balls enough to make it as a middle reliever in the big leagues, thatís probably as much as one can wish for. The Mariners (like the Yankees before them) have kept him starting in the minors, but he doesnít have the sort of peripherals that will survive in a major-league rotationóeven one that plays half its games in Seattle.
2012 It was an odd year for this erstwhile ground-ball pitcher. His sinking fastball, which had heretofore provided him with a way to survive his low velocity and unpromising strikeout rates, didn't have the same bite as in previous seasons, so his ground-out to air-out ratio, which stood at 3.06 in 2009 and 2.08 in 2010, was down to 1.22 in 2011, still favorable but hardly in elite territory. He also failed to make major progress with his command, which is still a bit shaky for a pitcher who can't count on stranding batters at home plate. Another oddity of his season was that left-handed hitters, normally a problem for Mitchell, hit only .251/.307/.376 against him versus .261/.358/.319 for righties. He still remained difficult to hit for power and an ERA of 3.18 at Triple-A is nothing to scoff about, even if it's not reflected in the pitcher's peripherals. Mitchell still looks like a decent candidate for a middle-relief job, or perhaps a bit more if he can get his sinker working again.
2011 Another Yankees pitching prospect knocking on the big-league door, Mitchell is a sinkerball specialist who sits 89-91 mph and, lacking a put-away pitch, just hopes to keep the ball on the ground and in the park. Despite the promotion to Triple-A, Mitchell's second pro season wasn't nearly as impressive as the firstóposting a 4.00 ERA for the Thunder takes work; it's like posting a 4.00 at Petco. His strikeout rate predictably dropped, but he was also wild for a pitcher of his approach and gave up a surprising number of long balls. Effective against right-handed hitters, we'll let you know the next time he retires a left-hander. Barring improvement, not impossible given how fast the Clemson product has moved through the minors, he's headed for middle relief or the back end of a National League rotation.
2010 D.J. Mitchell, a 2008 10th-rounder the Yankees went over-slot to sign, is an android sent back from the future on a mission to generate ground balls.
