BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Jermaine Mitchell appeared to be on the verge of a big-league look in Oakland after a fine 2011, but 27 is a bad age at which to stumble in the minors, which he did last year.
2012 Another of the growing legion of versatile outfielders in their mid-twenties who have yet to taste major league success, Jermaine Mitchell might have the best skills for the next level, with a mature approach at the plate and some thump in the bat.
2008 Mitchell had a nice full-season debut at Kane County last year, showing a patient approach at the plate as well as good speed and some center-field skills. He's a good athlete but a little raw as a baseball player, and because he was a little old for a Low-A player, many wonder if he'll hit enough in the end. The A's used to avoid this kind of high-risk player, but that's no longer the case. Every system needs athletes, even if only a few of them work out.
2007 In his first game as a pro, Mitchell went 3-for-4, and he never stopped hitting after that. He put together a 22-game hitting streak in August, and finished the 2006 season with a .362 batting average. Unfortunately, like almost every other A`s prospect he spent some time recuperating, in his case from a broken foot that cost him five weeks prior to his hitting streak. The A`s feel they got a steal in Mitchell, a fifth-round pick out of North Carolina-Greensboro, seeing him as a potential power/speed dynamo.

2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Josh Reddick? Is he over his head? Should the A's extend him? Does his hair qualify as a mullet under international mullet specifications?
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
The unfortunate thing about a player excelling from the moment he's traded to your team is that you haven't really paid attention to him before the trade. If Jermaine Mitchell came up from Sacramento to the big leagues and hit like Reddick has hit, I'd say "no, he's over his head" because I've followed his career a little bit for a few years. (Also because he's 27 and has a .258 TAv in AAA.) With Reddick, who knows. He has an amazing ability to foul off pitches that he has no business swinging at, which is certainly one way to go about having at-bats.

I refuse to issue a ruling on his hair because if he's got a mullet, then I'm awfully close. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Any room for Jermaine Mitchell to get 350 ABs in Oakland?
(Abe Froman from Chicago)
Hey Abe, sorry you got left out of the new Ferris Bueller Super Bowl commercial. Life is so unfair.

Anyway, Mitchell has put up some pretty solid minor league numbers, but he's always been a bit old for his league and isn't exactly at prime prospect age anymore. Plus, the A's acquired a bunch of OF's this year and will give them all first dibs at the playing time: Crisp, Reddick, Cowgill, Smith, etc. Mitchell will have to wait his turn, so 350 AB's seems very unlikely barring a wave of injuries.
