BP Annual Player Comments

2005 Some teams have found moderate success with low-cost cast-offs, so why not take a flyer here? At some point you wonder if that team will ever develop enough impact young players to contend again, but as long as guys like Minor don't block anyone good, no worries. The 1-in-100 chance he gets a job, swats 15 bombs and gets dealt for a decent prospect is the upside here.
2003 Minor’s 2002 is a cautionary tale for Mark Bellhorn or any other “unproven” Cub who needs Dusty Baker to let him establish himself. After Minor took over for the struggling J. T. Snow and mashed the ball for a couple of months, it only took a mini-slump—most likely just bad luck—for Baker to ditch him in favor of the veteran Snow. Minor even suffered the indignity of being left off the postseason roster in favor of such offensive powerhouses as Tom Goodwin and Shawon Dunston. He isn’t a great long-term solution at first, but he does represent a potent left-handed bat as he goes through his peak these next few years.
2002 Guys like Damon Minor don't catch many breaks, and they need to take advantage when those breaks come along. Minor didn't, hitting an empty .273 during a J.T. Snow trip to the disabled list. Snow returned, Galarraga arrived, and Minor was forgotten. He doesn't fit the Giants well, although he'd make a good backup for someone like Mike Sweeney or Richie Sexson.
2000 His walk rate jumped back up to go with a .273 average, 20 home runs and 33 doubles. He’s 26 years old and hasn't played above Double-A. It's entirely possible that Minor will have a Rookie of the Year season in 2002, followed by several years of mediocrity. At this point, that's the best he can hope for.
1999 Minor had terrific raw numbers for Bakersfield in '97, including 31 homers and a .923 OPS. But the DTs didn't buy it, and with good reason judging by the 1998 numbers. Even if Minor was hitting well, he's old for Double-A. Non-prospect.
