BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 A 2009 supplemental first-round pick out of Baylor (where he was a two-way player), Miller lost much of 2011 to a sports hernia that went undiagnosed until late in the year and eventually required surgery. He stayed healthy in 2012, but battled command problems. With those problems exacerbated by a lack of defensive support, his ERA stayed well above 4.00 from his third start to the end of the season even in a pitcher-friendly environment. Miller has low-90s velocity, with secondary stuff—a slider with true plus potential and a changeup with good sink—that still needs work. A shift to the bullpen may be in his future, though his .227/.348/.347 line against lefties suggests he won't be a shutdown LOOGY.
2012 Aaron Miller has low-90s velocity with good command, but his secondary stuff is subpar.
2011 A two-way player at Baylor, Miller caught scouts' eyes as a right fielder, but the Dodgers tabbed him as a pitcher in the supplemental phase of the first round in 2009. The 2010 season was his first full year on the mound, and he started hot at Inland Empire, showing low-90s velocity that touched 95 with good command. Promoted to Chattanooga in late June, he struggled with control and was battered while learning that man cannot live by fastball alone; by August, he was back in the Cal League, and his velocity had tailed off. As you'd expect for a pitcher with relatively few innings under his belt, Miller's secondary stuff—a power slider and a changeup—has a ways to go.
2010 The Dodgers' tabbed this fast-rising two-way lefty out of Baylor University as a supplemental first rounder in 2009. Though Miller spent most of his college career as an outfielder, the Dodgers had followed him as a pitcher since high school. His stuff has improved rapidly upon committing to the mound; he whiffed plenty of hitters in his pro debut with a 90-94 mph fastball and an excellent hard slider, though his changeup needs refinement. The organization was impressed with his poise as well. Expect him to climb quickly.
