2010 Randy Messenger only got cups of coffee with Seattle the last two years, and having gotten the message, signed with the Hanshin Tigers to take his chances abroad.
2009 The Mariners signed Messenger after the Giants released him last July, and stashed the hard-thrower in Tacoma for six weeks before giving him a late-season look in the majors. However, Messenger suffered from the same problem in Seattle that he exhibited with the Marlins, the Giants, and a host of their minor league affiliates: he couldn't consistently throw the ball across the plate. The Mariners need bullpen help, but Messenger won't fit that description unless he suddenly gains command of his pitches, an unlikely prospect at this stage of his career.
2008 Last August, inanimate objects continued their long winning streak against angry pitchers when Messenger, upset about losing a game, punched a plastic cart and broke his left hand, putting himself on the shelf for a month. It should have been six weeks: a rusty Messenger allowed 13 runs on 19 hits in six innings across seven outings at the end of the season. He throws enough strikes to be a viable fourth guy in the pen.
2007 If his control problems are more or less behind him, Messenger is a pretty average reliever, which isn`t a bad thing, so don`t shoot him.
2006 Another behemoth of a Marlins pitcher, Messenger was an 11th-round pick in 1999. He throws hard and that`s about it, but it worked for him when he converted from starting to relief two years ago. He battled wildness upon reaching the bigs. If he gets over that, he might settle in as a middle reliever. The Marlins may audition him for the closer`s role, but if he makes it, don`t look for much more than Billy Koch-style flash in the pan success.
