2013 Mendoza is a pitch-to-contact starter who depends on team defense to save him from the precipice of the big inning. He relies on his sinker yet switches to his curve once he jumps ahead of the batter. He keeps the ball in the infield and his home-run rate manageable. His strikeout rate has always been underwhelming, which is why he's a longshot to repeat even his middling performance from 2012. If he's in the rotation for the Royals in 2013, you'll know their offseason plan of adding starting pitching was unsuccessful.
2012 A funny thing happened on the way to Mendoza becoming a bona fide minor league journeyman… He put together an incredible season for Triple-A Omaha and was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year. The odds of that happening were equal to Nancy Grace having a civil dinner with Casey Anthony. To confound the situation further, Mendoza made a pair of highly successful starts at the major league level to close out his season. That’s just the kind of performance that will lead the Royals to think he can be a contributor to the rotation in 2012. The fact he struck out under five batters per nine innings for the season while posting an obscenely low BABIP and home run rate, makes him an unlikely candidate to repeat his success.
2011 Luis Mendoza throws a fastball that he complements with a second fastball. In the minors, Mendoza was a starter who struck out just four batters per nine. Such was the state of the Kansas City pen that he was called up anyway, but his four- and two-seamer combination made things easy on hitters in the bigs; he allowed a home run for each inning he pitched.
2010 Luis Mendoza in an unspectacular sinker specialist who will struggle to get chances, especially in this pitching-packed system.
2009 In their neediness, the Rangers had to turn to this Mexican sinkerballer no matter how unready he proved to be. The sinker didn't sink enough, and his secondary stuff lacked the movement and deception for him to do much more than hope he kept getting people to guess wrong; when so much is going amiss, it's hard to keep in mind what the guy does well, because you're seeing him working from the stretch non-stop. Once Mendoza improves his off-speed stuff, his low-90s heavy fastball is going to be able to deliver happy results. In the meantime, he really needs to be in Triple-A.
2008 A former prospect with the Red Sox who had all but fallen off the radar, right-hander Luis Mendoza had a surprising rebound at Double-A last year and got a big-league look. He projects as a middle reliever

2013-04-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have had injuries to my SP's and need replacements for the next moth or so. The important stats in my league are Quality Starts and K's. Which two of Dillon Gee, Nick Tepesch, Luis Mendoza, Kevin Slowley, Bartolo Colon, and Roberto Hernandez should I pick up? I am leaning toward Hernandez and Gee.
(Todd from Dallas)
I wish I knew. Gun to my head, please don't put a gun to my head. Then, after you put your gun away, I'd probably go with Colon and whomever you're feeling after that. (Matthew Kory)
2010-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Royals Fever! Catch it! I loved your old work on them. So I keep hearing how their ownership is smarter. So exactly how smart is a team that thinks Jason Kendall and Yuniesky Betancourt help form a strong middle core? And Gil Meche was worth signing to a huge long-term deal......
(dangor from New York)
Royals fan in NYC. They're everywhere. Obviously, they're misguided in their thinking on those players, though not so much Meche. The brass there just values the wrong things, in my opinion. Latest example is Luis Mendoza, who was picked up two days before the end of spring training and four days later was brought in to protect a one-run lead in the eighth. Yeah, he's got a 94 mph sinker. He also doesn't have a track record of, you know, retiring batters.

You'll never catch me calling the Royals dumb because I know Dayton Moore and like the man and he's always been very good to me. I also know that he's not dumb. I just don't agree with the way he evaluates big-league talent. I have hope that he'll redeem himself when some of his pitching prospects hit Kansas City. (Bradford Doolittle)
