BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Meloan pitched for four different organizations in 2009, as he was often the player that was first to be taken off of the 40-man roster when a move needed to be made, yet someone else always wanted to pick him up. Oakland received his first successful big-league performance. Teams have always seen potential in his 91-93 mph and power curve, so the A's might have caught lightning in a bottle for their bullpen.
2009 The lesser part of the spoils from mugging Colletti in the Blake deal, Meloan is a live arm with big-time control problems. The Dodgers tried to make him a starter last year, which didn't go well at all, but Cleveland returned him to the relief role that better suits his stuff and approach. If a re-acclimation to the bullpen leads to the calming of his excitable command, Meloan and his big-league heat could prove to be an asset for the Indians later on this season.
2008 Discovered by Logan White while he was scouting James Loney, this 2005 fifth-rounder was handled with kid gloves even as he shot through the system, tossing only 91 innings across four levels through his first two seasons. Working more regularly in 2007, Meloan avoided the elbow issues which hampered him in 2006, continuing to dominate both lefties (.174 average against) and righties (.144) with his 92- to 94-mph fastball and monstrous spike curveball. While his cup of coffee with the Dodgers didn't go well, it's notable that the two weeks he languished without an appearance coincided with Grady Little's attempt make Jonathan Broxton's arm fall off. Expect Meloan be in the mix for a bullpen slot out of spring training.
2007 Another Logan White find, this fifth-round 2005 pick out of the University of Arizona has rocketed through the system with impressive results at every stop; through 91 pro innings he`s struck out 145, walked just 34, and yielded a 2.67 ERA. Despite missing the first five weeks of 2006 with elbow soreness and being handled with kid gloves all year (generally pitching a couple innings every fifth day), Meloan dominated hitters with a 92 to 94 MPH fastball that touched 97 and a monster curveball. Given that he`s got no third pitch, he`s likely to stay in the bullpen, where some feel he has closer potential. The next step will be showing he can hold up once the Dodgers loosen the reins a bit.
