2016 The main beef from the Welington Castillo trade, Yoervis Medina throws a scintillating fastball and a mid-80s curveball that generates a hefty load of whiffs, but his walk rates suggest he has been fortunate to keep his runs-allowed figures as low as he has.
2015 For years Medina sat on the 40-man roster while other, bigger names came and went. He's turned out to be somewhat worth the wait, given that most people didn't realize they had been waiting. Medina's got a live arm and a power sinker that nets a nice groundball rate, and he would seem ideal for mid-inning jams. Unfortunately, many of the double plays that Medina induced were of his own making. Despite powerful stuff, he's never posted elite K:BB ratios because he can't steer the ball close enough to the zone to tempt them into swinging. What he is now is good enough to be a sixth- or seventh-inning guy, but even average control would make him a great reliever.
2014 Medina has prospered since moving to the bullpen at Double-A in 2012. His curveball and sinker ranked among the best pitches in the league when he could control them—hitters whiffed at nearly half the curveballs they offered at, and his sinker induced a grounder on 60 percent of balls in play. But the qualifier is key, as Medina's walk rate was the worst in baseball among relievers with at least 50 innings pitched. If he can rein that in, the raw stuff can play in a set-up role.
2013 For the first time since coming stateside, Yoervis Medina didn't pitch at three levels in a season, and the stability suited the hard-thrower.
2012 The Mariners kept Medina in Venezuela for four years, so now he's moving quickly through the system... mostly for worse. He started the season in High-A after making just six starts in the Midwest League last year. His new home, High Desert, is just the rottenest place in the world to pitch, but that doesn't entirely excuse his huge drop in strikeouts, or the 19 home runs he allowed in 105 innings. He was rescued by a social promotion to Double-A, but the home runs followed him. Medina is a thick body who throws hard, has good breaking stuff, and doesn't walk many, but it might do him good to get settled in and repeat a level.
2011 Yoervis Medina has spent all of 5 2/3 innings above A-ball, but that didn’t stop the Mariners from deeming him worthy of protection from the Rule 5 Draft. The big righty racked up the strikeouts, using a fastball that touched 94 to set up some of the best breaking stuff in the Northwest League.

2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)Who do think is next in line for saves in Seattle if they remove Fernando Rodney from closer? Seems like it would be Danny Farquhar, but I think you've said you like Yoervis Medina?
(Shawn from CT)
My educated guess is Farquhar, but yes I do like Medina as a sleeper candidate if Farquhar couldn't cut it. (Mike Gianella)
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)5x5 ROS: Mujica, Medina, or Will Harris? Already have Mujica so would have to cut him and FAAB one of the other two.
(Jeremy from Cleveland)
I'd go with Yoervis Medina, although I wouldn't spend more than $1-2. (Mike Gianella)
