2010 Medders was another of the veteran arms Sabean fished out to fix the bullpen, and another who thrived under Bochy's careful use, eventually earning more trust. If you accept that he needs to work around lefties now and again, you've got a reliever who can work well from the stretch who avoids making mistakes up in the zone, especially now that he's out of the Snakepit.
2008 Medders isn't gifted with an overpowering pitch, so early last year when he struggled with his command against right-handers and still couldn't fool lefties, it was enough to punch his ticket back to Tucson. Because he doesn't have a strong breaking pitch, the mistakes he was making up in the zone with a fastball/cutter mix were getting tattooed (eight homers in 22 1/3 innings prior to his June demotion). If he can keep the ball down, he can get back to being a useful arm in the back of the bullpen.
2007 It`s not entirely clear what a `tweaked scapula` is--we believe it`s some sort of Madagascan weasel with a bent tail, that or something that only happens to Carl Pavano--but Medders began his 2006 spring training with one after having labrum trouble in 2005. The short-armer struggled with his command early on, but recovered to have a decent season, lasting more than an inning in 18 of his appearances, and being notably stingy with the home run. His eight unearned runs allowed all happened in a two-game span in early July, so that shouldn`t be used as evidence of a problem. He doesn`t have a lot of bullpen street cred, but he`s an asset.
2006 Late in the season, Medders tripped on the dugout steps and tweaked his groin. A classic short-armer, he had a nice 2005 at two levels. He`ll be in the bullpen mix in 2006, but recovering from a torn labrum isn`t exactly a sure thing, promising 2005 or not.
