(tcogle from las Vegas) | I sort of ran through this yesterday, but in short, the Fish have a multiplicity of options because they have prospects who can hit a little in Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez, defensively-challenged young veterans like Josh Willingham and Jorge Cantu, and a one-for-one replacement for Jacobs in Dallas McPherson, at least in terms of skill sets. It's a choice the Marlins only have to make now if they decide to add a hitter in the outfield or a third baseman who can pick it; otherwise, they really can go into spring training and have some fun sorting it out. I'd probably do the pitching staff the favor of trying Cantu, and mix in some McPherson. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-09-12 13:00:00 | what player do you think will turn into the carlos quinten of 2009? a player stuck between AAA and the majors and never gets a chance to prove himself but when he finally does he goes off (krgrecw from cola sc) | I think it's a bit of a misconception that Quentin was never given an opportunity in Phoenix--he did, and he blew it. The Snakes then made the overlapping decisions to bring up Justin Upton and (unfortunately) to commit to Eric Byrnes on a multi-year deal. The former made sense, and the latter was something a few of us here panned pretty vociferously at the time. The upshot was that Quentin became available, and while dealing from a surplus is fine in principle, the Snakes didn't have a surplus, they had an affectation for Eric Byrnes. That's a gift that's going to keep on giving.
As a result, I don't have an answer per se, in that Quentin's situation was unfortunate, but then his explosion, to this extent, was also very much unanticipated, both inside and outside the game. A year ago, some people might have said Steven Pearce was that guy; it's fun to say that Dallas McPherson could be, but he's not that good either. If you're looking for guys who had bumpy rookie years who should blossom as sophomores, I'd suggest Carlos Gonzalez in Oakland, or Jeff Clement in Seattle. (Christina Kahrl) |

(Milby from San Francisco) | A lot of those TTO guys are capable of a monster campaign if they have a year where the balls land for hits, but, as both Pena and McPherson have shown, the chance is also there that you fall flat on your face and hit .220, and your team loses confidence in you. | 2008-01-17 14:00:00 | Hi Christina, thanks for the chat. Here's my question--I've been surprised that Morgan Ensberg and Dallas McPherson were both a)non-tendered, and b)haven't been signed. Both of these look like valuable 3B to me, albeit neither in the immediate recent past. Should we expect to see them in someone's training camp in April, or are they really not worth signing? (Adam from DC) | They'll both wind up with somebody; to a certain extent we're in that stretch of time where some players have to simply put up, shut up, and sign, before everyone goes in that dreaded "some other direction." There are still teams without a starting third baseman (the Phillies, Giants, and Marlins, for example), so I'm assuming either man's agent should be pestering those teams on a near-daily basis at this point. His K and BB numbers in the minor leagues and his short stint in the majors last year lower my hopes for him. (iggith from Philly) | I think McPherson's going to be a very good player. His walk were down a little in 2004, but he drew 138 between 2002 and 2003, about one for every 7-8 times up. Yes, you'd like to see his plate discipline improve sooner rather than later. But power remains the number one skill a top prospect can have to find success. If his health isn't an issue, he'll start swatting pitches out of the park, and he'll get some of the benefit of "power hitter walks", where he reaches base simply because the opposing pitcher doesn't want to face a quick 2-0 deficit.
